VI Athletes active in Youth Olympic Games

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China officially began with the completion of the spectacular Opening Ceremony last Saturday August 16, 2014 and already the majority of the athletes representing the Territory have seen active competition.

With “yoggers” in hand and pins ready for exchanging, they have already enjoyed the experience of this international sporting, educational and cultural festival for teenagers.

First day of competition for team Virgin Islands (VI) kicked off on Monday August 18, 2014 with the start of the Byte II sailing regatta and the 50m Women's Butterfly.

In sailing, after Race 4 of a total of 11 races, Sam Morrell was ranked 24th, then he had his best finish so far, 12th, in Race 5. He came 28th in Race 6 and 19th in Race 7 to enter today’s rest day in 25th place overall.

Athletics is also underway with the highlight today being the Women’s 100m, which sees Nelda Huggins compete.
On Wednesday, August 20, Deya Erickson ran 14.76 in the Women's 100m Hurdles.

Kala Penn leapt 5.22 in the Women's Long Jump to reach the “B” Finals on Friday Night and Lakeisha Warner ran 2:18.67 in the Women's 800m to qualify for the “C” Final.

Tomorrow Friday August 22, 2014 Kyron McMaster runs the 400m Intermediate Hurdles and Akeem Bradshaw competes in the Triple Jump.

The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee (BVIOC) in collaboration with the Caribbean Broadcasting Inc (CBI) is pleased to confirm that live coverage of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games from Nanjing China can now be seen on Caribbean Broadcast Network (BVI) Limited (CBN) – Television (Channel 51).
