VI announces Brazil & South Africa travel ban
“As we monitor the COVID-19 situation in the Caribbean and around the world, there remains a serious cause for concern with the dreaded disease. New strains are emerging and several countries including the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil… the lives and the economies of the world are being affected in immeasurable ways,” he said.
With travel bans already active for the UK and the Dominican Republic, Hon Malone said Cabinet has taken the latest decision given that new strains of the virus have emerged in the two countries.
New COVID-19 strains a concern
“This is why in a most recent cabinet meeting in light of new strains of COVID-19 been prevalent in South Africa and Brazil the decision was taken that in addition to the United Kingdom and the Dominican Republic, to implement a travel ban of persons travelling from South Africa and Brazil to the Virgin Islands,” he said.
He said as a reminder, the ban was put in place to promote public safety during the COVID-19 pandemic and does not apply to certain categories of persons coming to the territory.
These include nationals, belongers, residents, work permit holders, persons permitted to reside in the territory, diplomats and persons employed by government and statutory agencies.
Those returning from those locations would be mandated to undergo 14 days of quarantine.
