VG United piles pressure on Old Madrid!
Those goals from Leonardo Davis and David Baptiste earned VG United their second successive victory after a 6-0 drubbing of Lucien Stars on Sunday and left beleaguered Old Madrid with defeats in their last two outings.
Right from the first whistle, VG gradually began to pile on the pressure and it was nothing more than they deserved when Davis’ neat turn and shot put them ahead on eleven minutes.
Old Madrid matched VG for the early parts of the first half despite going a goal down, but started to lose their shape and composure with miss placed passes and a growing “gap” between a beleaguered defense and a front line that was playing too far apart to cause VG much trouble.
Dion Clarke created a few problems for VG, but with Clifton James drifting back into defense from the right wing they left themselves too few attacking options. Sheldon Harry ran his socks off, but had to come too deep to pick the ball up and the VG defense had plenty of time to organize themselves against any threat.
To be fair, both sides looked a little short on confidence, with series of passes going astray, but it was VG who continued to create the better openings.
Old Madrid’s Cleve Dowling was much the busier goalkeeper making fine saves from Denzil Joseph, Hilton Matthew and Darren Williams.Ironically, it was only after Elroy Mills had brought the best out of Junior Walker in VG’s goal that United doubled their lead.
In the 41st minute, a corner on the left taken by Teavon Mongra was flicked on at the near post and powerfully headed home from 6 yards out by David Baptiste, giving Dowling no chance.
VG United began the second half in the same manner they had ended the first in almost complete dominance, but were unable to increase their lead.Dowling called on to make save after save and some last ditch defending keeping the rampant VG at bay.
However, the real tale of the half was a disallowed goal at either end and a missed Old Madrid penalty which should have given them a lifeline.Despite all the VG misses and Old Madrid bickering amongst themselves, they could still have rescued at least a point.
When they play as a team, get the ball under control and pass it around, Old Madrid can truly play. Unfortunately it didn’t happen often enough. A nest interchange of passing down the left wing between Rodney Prince and Garnett Ferron caused all sorts of havoc across the VG back line. Ferron darted into the box, evaded one tackle and then as the ball bounced up it was blocked by the hand of a VG defender. Referee Carl Barrett pointed to the spot.Kenmore Peters strode up but hit his shot too close to Walker who affected a save with his legs.
The miss seemed to drain the enthusiasm out of Old Madrid and the game played out with VG looking more likely to score. In fact Raphael John was on hand late on to make two headed goal line clearances as for once Dowling was beaten.
Dowling was upset with the way Old Madrid had played, but acknowledged they need to solve their on-field problems. “We have a lot of work to do, we came out to win the game, but then the team didn’t blend together. We are not united and are cussing against each other. We spoke about it before the game, but now have to go back to the drawing board and work harder.”
