VG residents call for cadet programme
The cadet programme is one that is an arm of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and was once a very vibrant programme on the island. However, for some two and a half years now it has been dormant.
This was brought to the attention of Commissioner of Police (CoP) Mr David Morris at a recent community meeting held in the Catholic Community Centre on Virgin Gorda. He told residents at that meeting that there were several challenges that have affected the continuation of the programme even as he sounded an appeal for persons to step forward to take up leadership roles in the programme.
Major Selwyn F. Rock under whose watchful eyes the cadet programme falls was not present at the community meeting but told this news site in a subsequent interview that it has been over two and a half years that the programme had reached a dead end at Virgin Gorda. Like CoP Morris, Major Rock said that the main challenge is that of leaders.
He explained that of the two leaders that were carrying the programme one had migrated while the other had joined the RVIPF as a fulltime police officer. He said that they are currently working around the clock to grant the wishes of the people by getting the programme back in order.
Rock told this news site that senior leaders of the Tortola Cadet Programme have indicated their willingness to travel to the sister island to assist in getting the programme back on stream and to train prospective leaders.
He however stressed that it is important that persons from Virgin Gorda step forward as volunteers. “It is very important that we have parents supporting the programme and being there for the youths,” stressed Rock as he noted that there is always the dire need for maximum adult supervision.
So far according to Rock, the CoP has given permission for a section of the Virgin Gorda Police Station to be used for classroom sessions while the paved frontage was approved to be used for drill sessions.
Rock anticipates that by the break of September 2014 they would have the Cadet Programme back in full swing on the sister island.

Fool!
In other countries, parents willingly volunteer to assist in activities in which their children are involved. What's wrong with us? Why can't parents take a more active role in their children's lives, rather than expecting some faceless volunteer to do it for them?
