NORTH SOUND, Virign Gorda, VI - Ms Gladyet Walters of North Sound, Virgin Gorda is now the latest recipient of the VI Government's social home programme under the Ministry of Health and Social Development.

Ms Walters has since collected the keys to her new home under the Ministry’s Housing Recovery Assistance Programme, which started after the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), in expressing delight that Ms Walters is now a new homeowner, urged her to treat her new home with love and care.

He also extended appreciation to the team at his Ministry for their dedicated work in ensuring residents on the Sister Islands get the help they need.

Social homes available across the VI

“They have done a great deal of work in ensuring that Miss Walters and other residents across the Territory benefit from this programme. We have been doing these social homes all over the Virgin Islands, in Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and on Tortola and we intend to continue. Therefore, I am pleased to handover yet another house this year and also another house on one of our sister islands.”

Ms. Walters in receiving the home expressed her gratitude to the Ministry for ensuring that she now has a new home, “I am deeply grateful for my new social home that means so much to me and I want to thank everyone who made this possible. This has truly transformed my life,” Miss Walters said.

These homes should be built by the contractors in the village or from the Sister Islands. This does not benifit the Island when you have someone have to come from Tortola to build a house in Virgin Gorda and there so many Virgin Gordian contractors. Hon. Vincent Wheatley you have to get it right. This is incompetence.

@ VG Resident, I think if you learn the procurement process now in place you would eat your statements made. The Government has various types of bidding processes. This one was open to any contractor in the Virgin Islands to bid on and is run by the Ministry of Finance. After the bids are received, opened and evaluated a winner emerges and the recommendation is given to Cabinet. Cabinet when they approves it, it is then handed back over to the Ministry of Health.
While vincent may have a say at the Cabinet stage he has no/very little input with the selection of contractor. So I am going to defend him in this regard. Cut the man some slack.

"urged her to treat her new home with love and care." Now Vincent, you look at that woman's age and that's the best thing you could have said to her??? Im sure she knows just how to take care of a house. Just tell the woman you hope she can
feel comfortable and safe in her new house or something of that effect.

His advice is warranted because there are those who have benefitted and you won't believe how unkept they are. For example, the Hermans in Freshwater Pond, they received two houses. Look at how they keep the front of the white house.
