VG Festival pulls through without Committee
This is the opinion of Rhodni Skelton, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of VI Festival and Fairs Committee, who disclosed that the planning of the Festival fell on the shoulders of two individuals - Franklyn Walters and Sharon Flax-Mars.
“Given the fact that there was no Committee, these two citizens took the bull by its horn and began organising the family oriented event that has been a Virgin Islands tradition for over 50 years, within a few weeks,” Skelton told Virgin Islands News Online.
“By all indications from the number of persons that came on the ferries, I think the events were well supported…I think the Virgin Gorda economy was given a boost.”
The highlights of the Festival included the highly competitive Calypso competition, the Fisherman’s Tournament and the grand parade.
Funding an issue
Although an additional $40,000 was allocated to the Festival, the PRO revealed that the money was used to cushion the gap left by sponsors.
“…because of the late planning, sponsors did not step up to the plate, so that money had to be used to keep things afloat,” he added.
However, Skelton is optimistic that planning for next year’s Festival will be sorted out well in advance by a “solid Committee and better planning and marketing.”
He is also urging residents to come on board to make the VG Festival a success, adding, “Don’t just sit back and criticize…if you see something give your feedback. It will benefit everyone.”
This year’s Festival was held under the theme, “A cultural reflection among ourselves, for Virgin Gorda’s festival 2012”.
