VG Festival Committee cries foul; Block Party reportedly hampered fundraiser
In fact the Committee is already in debt as Culture Minister Hon Myron V. Walwyn promised the people of Virgin Gorda and their festival sub-committee that they would be granted $100,000 for their 2016 festival, but only delivered on $60,000, according to information obtained by this news site from festival spending records.
This news site understands that the monies owed ($40,000) are needed by the VG Easter Festival Committee to pay its bills incurred from the 2016 event.
‘Bullet in the chest’
Meanwhile, for Virgin Gorda the 2017 VG Easter Festival will be a half century milestone - 50 years, come next year. When the committee organised its first major fundraising event it did so with the understanding that it would have had the fullest support of Government, its social arms and the entire territory.
However, according to several persons from the sister island, they were disappointed when the VI Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) moved to stage a major free Block Party on the same night of the Virgin Gorda fundraising event.
"That was totally a bullet in the chest of the Virgin Gorda people. They lost big time on that show (Kings of Comedy) big loss and I blame the Tortola Festival committee because they could have done their block party on another day," ranted one Virgin Gordian who opted to be identified only as Minty.
The man went onto further state, "VG had their thing planned long before and the block party could have been the next day. It's obvious that they not looking out for VG. Tola had two big events that block party and the track event. VG had boat schedule adjusted and everything for Tola people to come for VG thing but why pay for a show when you can go to a free one in these hard times?" said Minty.
This news site confirmed with several persons who were present at the event that the turn-out was far beyond expectation. Non-the-less, the show was one of high quality and suitable for the entire family.
The Block Party on De Castro Street on July 2, 2016 was well attended.
Efforts to get a comment from both the VG Easter Festival Committee and the VI Festival and Fairs Committee were futile up to time of publication.
