VG Easter Festival Cheques bounced
The cheques, this news site understands, were written after the festivities concluded some weeks ago but the persons who got them were surprised that they could not redeem the tender at the bank. “I am not any big business person, I am a small fish so I depend on my few dollars which I work for honestly in a timely manner,” said one of the disappointed businessman.
This was the plight of more than one person and Public Relations Officer of the VGEFC Mr Jerrel A. George did confirm receiving such complaints. He told this news site that the challenge was that the committee is still awaiting some of the monies budgeted by the Festival and Fairs Committee for the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival.
“We submitted every bill, receipt, a full financial report very early and on time but we are still not in possession of remaining monies so we can deal with outstanding expenses,” said George.
He said that they did exceed the budgeted $100K. “We did go over, [and] we haven’t received some from the $100k,” he noted.
George said that they are pressing to get the balance due the committee as early as possible and they hope the excess can also be forthcoming as it all represents genuine and unavoidable expenses. He said the monies outstanding are for some small vendors as well as other big ones like some hotels.
Chairman of the BVI Festivals and Fairs Committee Mr Marvin Blyden could not be reached up to last evening for confirmation and however this news site will endeavour to get a timely response.
It was the occasion of the launch of the VGEF of 2014 that Blyden had laid the blame of the non-release of the 2013 reports at the feet of the Virgin Gorda 2013 team. While the former chairman of the VG committee Mr Rupert Vanterpool Jr did not take lightly such blame, Blyden did give reporters the assurance that the report would be out by the end of the 2014 festivals and fairs.

Last year bills should have been paid before they got their money. One have nothing to do with the other. Last year bills have nothing to do with this years bills. Leave him out of this mess. As far as I know this year should have had lots of money left back. It was poor management. NO major artist. No Coney Island, No nothing for the people of VG and yet they when over budget. Think about it.
Issuing bad cheques can have a serious and detrimental impact on the recipients life and financial reputation. Assuming the funds are safely in their account, the recipient goes ahead and writes cheques to pay bills, etc. This happened to me many years back when government issued me a bad cheque. It was terribly embarassing. To add insult to injury, I had to pay returned cheque fees costing more than $75.00 because of their bad cheque! Of course, the government doesn't care about things like that. I no longer deal with the government on any level as a result.
Anyway, it is ridiculous that an overdraft isn't in place to prevent such nonsense. The government should hang their heads in shame. The people and businesses provided services, PAY THEM!
