USVI's 16th COVID-19 death is 59-year-old man from St John

FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- The [US[ Virgin Islands Department of Health (DoH) on Thursday night, September 3, 2020, announced that the coronavirus has taken the life another US Virgin Islander, the 16th Covid-19 related death in the US Territory.

"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the Territory’s sixteenth death related to COVID-19.

The deceased is a 59-year old male on St John," DoH said in a statement.

The latest death came three days after the 15th fatality — a 49-year-old St Thomas man.

The deaths come as DoH has been reporting a decline in positive cases over the past few days. The department reported only one COVID-19 infection on Wednesday, and four cases Tuesday. Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion told the Consortium Thursday night that the data being released will show a low number of infections as well.

Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr has extended to September 8, 2020, a Stay-at-Home Order that was scheduled to expire Monday.

The order calls for the closure of non-essential businesses, beaches on weekends from 12 noon, and the halting of most lodging reservations to the USVI, among other directives.
