USVI: Woman arrested for allegedly attacking husband as he slept
CHARLOTTE, AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI — A woman who reportedly attacked her husband after he spent time doing errands on her behalf is now facing domestic violence charges before the courts.
According to court documents, in the early hours of Monday morning, December 18, 2023, police were dispatched to the La Delicia area after receiving a call about damaged documents. Responding officers encountered a man in obvious distress, bearing scratches and bruises about his body. Investigations would later reveal that the man had sustained lacerations and abrasions on both sides of his neck, his biceps and various points on his torso. He also bore a bite mark above his left elbow, police say.
Declining medical attention, the man told police that he had spent the afternoon running errands. First, he went to the laundromat, then to the car wash to wash the vehicle for his wife of two years, Quartenay Braven. He returned home, he said, and then went back out to purchase food when she said she was hungry.
After returning home for the second time, the man said he placed his phone on their bedroom dresser and went to sleep. At some point, he began to hear movement around him, and said that he opened his eyes to find Mrs. Braven standing over him with a knife in her right hand. The man told police that he grabbed her hand to prevent her from using the knife on him and asked her what happened, but she attacked anyway. During the incident, Mrs. Braven reportedly used a charging cable, an empty beer bottle, and a hanger to hit her husband, held him by the chain he was wearing around his neck, and threatened to kill him.
Eventually, the man told police, his wife threw his clothes outside and tore a page from his passport, issued by the Dominican Republic. The man said that he was able to take his passport back before she was able to do any further damage.
Female attacker declined to give statement to police
When police made contact with Mrs. Braven, she declined to provide a statement and was subsequently arrested and charged with third-degree assault, simple assault and battery, destruction of property, and disturbance of the peace by threats, all as acts of domestic violence.
Mrs. Braven was then remanded into custody to await her advice of rights hearing.
In court on Wednesday, Magistrate Paula Norkaitis found probable cause to uphold all the charges against her, and set bail at $5,000, payable in full. Once released, Mrs. Braven will be required to contact the probation office every week by telephone, and abide by a daily 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew. She must leave the home she shares with her husband and maintain a minimum distance of 100 feet away from him at all times. There is to be absolutely no contact between them, whether directly or through a third party.
The next court appearance for Mrs Braven is scheduled for Friday, January 19, 2023.
