USVI: School bus accident on St. Croix
FREDERIKSTED, St. Croix, USVI- The V.I. Department of Education announced that a school bus accident occurred on St. Croix as the bus travelled west on the Queen Mary Highway Wednesday morning, August 22, 2024, transporting students to various schools.
According to the Education Department in a press release, the bus was carrying students to St. Croix Central High School, St. Croix Educational Complex, and two students en route to John H. Woodson Jr. High School when it was struck by another vehicle causing slight damage to the bus.
Several students on board the bus required medical attention following the accident, and officials contacted the parents of the affected students. According to the release, arrangements were made to ensure these students received the necessary medical care.
Meanwhile, reports on social media indicate that some students were taken to the Juan F. Luis Hospital Emergency Room after a school bus accident, while others remained on the bus. Attorney Kye Walker, whose two nieces were involved in the incident, stated that she and another parent personally transported some students to the ER. However, the students taken directly to their schools had not yet been assessed.
"Please, please call your child and check on them," Ms. Walker urged, "Even if they feel the slightest pain or no pain at all, still take them to the doctor or ER."
The Department of Education said an investigation into the incident is underway, with the V.I. Police Department and the bus company working closely with education officials to gather further details. An official incident report is expected to be released soon.
