USVI records over 130 COVID-19 cases in past week
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, USVI - The USVI Department of Health (D.O.H) on Friday, August 28, 2020, reported 43 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. Virgin Islands, an indication that cases remain steady in the territory.
D.O.H. reported 45 cases between Wednesday and Thursday, and 46 cases between Monday and Tuesday, for a total of 134 cases from Monday.
St. Croix registered 7 of the total count, St. John 2, and St. Thomas 34.
According to D.O.H., 11 of the St. Thomas cases were community transmission infections, 7 close contact and 16 of those cases were under investigation. St. Croix saw two community spread cases, three close contact and 2 were under investigation. St. John's two cases were under investigation as of Friday.
Stay-at-Home order could be extended
The steadiness of the cases means Governor Albert Bryan will most likely extend the Stay-at-Home order, executed two weeks ago, for an additional week or two. The governor had said a decision to extend or end the order would be dependent on how cases were trending.
The D.O.H. said it was tracking 213 active cases, and that as of Friday, 864 people had recovered from the virus.
Relative to active cases, St. Croix had 50 as of Friday, St. John 9 and St. Thomas 154.
To date 15,918 people have been tested for the virus, with 1,118 testing positive and 14,714 testing negative.
