USVI: Licensed gun owner suffers self-inflicted injury @ Festival Village

FREDERIKSTED, St. Croix, USVI- An accidental discharge of a firearm occurred on Sunday evening at Festival Village’s Coney Island area, prompting a swift response from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD).

According to VIPD Director of Communications Glen Dratte, the incident happened around 9:53 p.m. on December 29. According to the report, a licensed firearm owner suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his right calf.

Gun went off while adjusting holster

The man, who was on a ride with his minor child at the time, told authorities that the discharge occurred while he was adjusting his firearm holster, which was in an Appendix Carry position.

EMS transported the individual to the Emergency Room for treatment. At the scene, a Crime Scene Technician (CST) recovered the firearm, a Canik MC9 9mm, along with a spent shell casing. After receiving medical care for a minor gunshot wound, the man was treated and subsequently released.

Police confirmed that no other individuals were injured during the accidental discharge.

      Because it’s his right as a licensed firearm owner. Now that accidental is another story, he needs a better holster

    THOSE ARE MY THOUGHT ALSO , AM GLAD THE MINOR WASN'T HURT , AND AS WE DON'T KNOW THE CIRCUMSTANCES WHY HE CHOOSED TO CARRY A FIREARM IN THAT AREA ITS IS PURE CRAZINESS . WHY GO SOMEWHERE TO ENJOY YOURSELF ANX HAVE TO TAKE A WEAPON ❓️????

      Aside from your post demonstrating that you're borderline illiterate, it's also illogical. You admit that you don't know the circumstances as to why he was carrying, but then decry why he would do so in "a place he went to enjoy himself." What if he's had threats to his life, or his family's safety, and that's the reason he got a license to carry? It's clear that he should have his license revoked because his gun-handling skills are sub-par; the Canik MC9 is a very good pistol and he should not have put his finger on the trigger, which he clearly did in order to discharge the gun, which has a built-in trigger safety. Also, he obviously had a round in the chamber, which also poses and additional risk of an AD if the guy is incompetent when it comes to handling a pistol, which is clearly the case here.

      Again, just in case you're incapable of understanding what I'm saying here, it's NOT the venue where he was carrying, but how he handled (actually mis-handled) the gun.
