USVI among participants as Powerball jackpot reaches $750m
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI - The Powerball jackpot is skyrocketing, and residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands are among those with an opportunity to cash in.
The jackpot has swelled to an estimated $750 million ahead of Wednesday night's drawing, making it the sixth largest in the game's history.
There were no winners in Monday's draw, as no ticket matched the winning white balls numbered 7, 23, 24, 32, 43, and the red Powerball 18. As a result, the potential prize has now risen, offering players the choice of a $750 million annuity paid out in annual increments, or a single lump sum payment of $378.8 million before taxes.
These massive prizes are a result of the Powerball's astronomically high odds, calculated at 1 in 292.2 million. The all-time largest Powerball jackpot was an astonishing $2.04 billion claimed last November.
The last Powerball jackpot win was recorded on April 19, where one lucky participant walked away with a $252.6 million prize. Since then, there have been 35 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner.
The Powerball game spans across 45 states and includes participants from Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
In related news, another multistate lottery, the Mega Millions, is also seeing a significant increase in its prize pool.
The jackpot for Friday night’s drawing has grown to $560 million, with a cash option of $281.1 million. Much like the Powerball, the Mega Millions hasn't seen a jackpot winner since April 18, increasing anticipation for the upcoming drawings.
