FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- An 83-year-old man has died from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle on Queen Mary Highway near the Target Service Station on Tuesday evening, November 12, 2024, at 6:04 p.m.

The VIPD initially reported the incident on Thursday, November 14, 2024, but has now confirmed that the victim died as a result of the accident. Earlier, the department stated it would await an autopsy to determine the extent of the injuries and the official cause of death.

The pedestrian, identified as Alexander Springer, was reportedly crossing the roadway when he was hit by an eastbound silver Toyota Yaris. According to initial investigations, Springer appeared to have stepped into the path of the oncoming vehicle. He sustained severe injuries to his head and neck and was transported to the Juan F. Emergency personnel promptly informed his next of kin, who positively identified Springer.

The incident remains under active investigation by the VIPD's Traffic Investigation Bureau in the St. Croix District.

Authorities are urging both motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution on the territory’s roadways to prevent further tragedies.

That was my Dad. I lived with my father for six months, and not one time did he step out on to traffic when I was with him, and he hadn't had is cataract surgery done yet. He had is procedure done and had 20/20 vision when this occurred, which called carelessness on the driver. the way he was broke up that person was not paying attention to the road and broke my father up on one side enough to cause death, which is considered murder in my eyes and that person who was driving old or not need to pay for killing my father, sorry but that i feel

What a shame. To live that long and be hit by a car to end his life was so very very sad. All drivers, no matter where they live, need to be cautious driving at all times. Some pedestrians don't use caution either because I see them looking in the opposite direction of oncoming traffic or on their phones not paying attention. I see them and slow down and honk at them. It is then they realize they haven't even looked up before stepping into the roadway. Poor old man.
