US on edge over fatal police beating of black youth
CNN reported that police officers, who were also Black, were charged with second-degree murder in the beating of Tyre Nichols, 29, who died in hospital on January 10, three days after being stopped on suspicion of reckless driving.
"They had beat him to a pulp," Nicholas' mother RowVaughn Wells said. "He had bruises all over. His head was swollen like a watermelon. His neck was bursting because of the swelling."
Mother sobbing over death of son
"I knew my son was gone, even if he did live he would have been a vegetable," wells said, sobbing.
Memphis police chief CJ Davis said the video shows Nicholas crying out for his mother ,"What I saw on this video was more of a group thing sort of mentality. And no one took a step to intercept or intervene," Davis said on CNN.
"And that's why the charges are as severe as they are." Davis compared the video to the 1991 Rodney King beating video, which sparked days of riots in Los Angeles that left dozens dead.
"I was in law enforcement during the Rodney King incident, it's very much aligned with that same type of behaviour," Davis said. "I would say it's about the same, if not worse."
Nicholas' death at the hands of police also recalled the May 2020 killing of George P. Floyd, another Black man whose suffocation by a white police officer in Minneapolis was caught on film.
UK police introduced to VI force
The issue has sent shockwaves not just in the US, but in the VI where some persons have questioned the introduction of a large number of UK police officers into the VI police force, and whether the VI can descend into a state where officers target citizens on frivolous allegations or race as in the case in some parts of the UK.
Congressman Steve Cohen who had a private screening of the Nicholas beating footage just before it was made public Friday night described the footage as “overwhelming to watch.”
“It’s clear that Tyre Nichols died because of the brutality and callous disregard, really an appalling lack of humanity, of the Memphis police officers,” he said.
“From the first encounter with the police, it’s clear this was about ego. There was no respect for Tyre Nichols and no answer to his simple question asking what he’d done,” the congressmen said.
