Urgent! BVI Red Cross appeals to public for blood donations
Challenges
There has been an overwhelming request for blood donations. The challenges are that persons are not coming forward to donate blood especially persons with rare blood types, a press release from BVI Red Cross on January 25, 2022, stated.
BVI Red Cross noted that of all the blood type, O negative is usually in short supply because this blood type is very rare. Another challenge is that the Virgin Islands’ population is very small and blood has a shelf life of 42 days.
COVID 19 & Blood Donations
According to the press release, if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 you should wait 14 days following a diagnosis to donate blood.
“Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine does not restrict anyone from donating blood. There is no need to wait to give blood if you received a non-replicating, inactivated, or RNA based COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca, Janssen/J&J, Moderna, Novavax, or Pfizer,” the press release stated.
Why donations are needed
Blood donations, according to BVI Red Cross, are critical in medical procedures such as surgery, treatment of cancer and management of specific diseases.
It said every year over 100 million units of blood are donated to save lives.
