UPDATE: 'Victory was earned not given' - Up 2 Da Time’s Assistant Coach ‘Redz’
Fans and families of players who traveled from Tortola, St Thomas (USVI) and all parts of Virgin Gorda crammed into the Jeffrey Caines Sports Arena in the Valley to witness for themselves the showdown virtually between Tortola and Virgin Gorda.
The excitement was in the air and the crowd was loud as the game tipped off after 11:00 P.M. with Virgin Gorda’s Up 2 Da Time enjoying the support of home crowd fans but Tortola’s East Rockers holding its own in terms of fan support.
We came to win- Coach Redz
However, it was clear that Up 2 Da Time came out with blood in their eyes after it was a do or die for both teams going into the final game with the best of 5 series locked at 2-2. Up 2 Da Time led in each quarter, sometimes as much as 20 points, as East Rockers seemed to have left their momentum and energy in Look Long, East End or Belle Vue.
Up 2 Da Time’s Assistant Coach Erwin S. Telemaque aka ‘Redz’ told our newsroom that “my team came out to win and my team worked hard for this championship…it was earned not given.”
Coach Redz also had another Championship in the B Division with Time 2 Wuk.
The final score was Up 2 Da Time 89 points to East Rockers’ 67, with the 2016 Summer Jam Championship game ending at 1:00 A.M. this morning.
Four Up 2 Da Time players: Killven M. Samuel, Kimron A. Telemaque, Stephon S. Caul and Kimani T. Stevens were on fire and showed a very high level of basketball skills.
On the East Rockers side, David ‘Bolo’ Lettsome, Douron Phillip, Shamoii A. Dagou and Dwayne ‘Kobo’ Penn held their own but were no match for the high flying Up 2 Da Time powerhouse players.
Three Divisions, Three MVPs
Meanwhile, three 2016 MVPs were announced immediately after the game this morning. In the C Division, the MVP for the Championship Team Beat That is Malaki A. Smith of Tortola.
For the B Division Championship Team, Time 2 Wuk, the MVP is Kimron A. Telemaque of Virgin Gorda and for the A Division Championship Team, Up 2 Da Time, the MVP is Killven M. Samuel, also of Virgin Gorda.
The final game last night brings to an end the 2016 Virgin Gorda Basketball Association Summer Jam League, according to Association President Trevor M. ‘West’ Stevens.
