ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Both basketball teams from the VI were victorious in their opening matches at the first annual Youth Summer Slam Classic Tournament which opened on Friday, August 16 at Multi-purpose Sports Complex.

The tournament, organised by Sports Vision Academy (SVA), has participation from Antigua, St. Eustatius, and St. Thomas and St Croix in the US Virgin Islands. 

SVA Stars Jr, who played in the second match of the day, defeated Wadadli Elite Jr, of Antigua, 33-23. SVA Jr’s Tiondre Martin scored 10 points with 8 rebounds and 2 blocks while Jaiden Cameron scored 7 points. 

Wadadli’s Elijah Charles scored 11 points. 

In game 3 SVA Stars Sr. in games 3 defeated Diker Sports of St Eustatius 58-51. SVA Sr’s Jamarlet Ramires scored 30 points and had 9 steals while Michael Sue scored 17 points. 

For Diker Sports, Hinder De Jesus scored 19 points and had 5 steals. 

In the other matches, Alliance (St. Croix) defeated Wadadli Elite (Antigua) 71-43 and Alliance (St. Croix) defeated Diker Sports (St. Eustatius) 47-10. 

Matches continue this afternoon. 

VI U14 Boys Football team lose to Dominica 3-0 in opening match

Meanwhile, Virgin Islands boys U14 football squad went down to Dominica 3 nil in their opening match of the Caribbean Football Union Boys’ U14 Challenge Series at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad. 

The team was originally scheduled to face Anguilla in their opening game but faced Dominica instead during the tournament which runs from August 26 to 25, 2024 in Trinidad. 

VI boys will come up against Anguilla, Turks and Caicos Islands and the US Virgin Islands in upcoming matches. 

The VI squad is captained by Miles Penn and includes Trevon Stevens, Emery Jones, Carlon Stewart, Kyrique Matthew, Zaed Chalwell, Quinn Pascoe, Quacey Coopers, Kerjahni Prevost, Devin Daley, Akhori Gilford, James Tucker Davis, Delanie Gordon, and Bryson Walters. 

Cassandra J. Gregg (Head Coach), Thomas Albert (Assistant Coach), Morris Mark (Goal Keeper Coach/Kit Manager), Jeffery Demming (Trainer), Chester James (Physio), and Priya Mohamed (Team Manager), complete the VI’s contingent in Trinidad.

VI youth footballers off to T&T; VI host youth basketball classi

- Both tournaments get underway today, August 16 

The Virgin Islands youth footballers and basketballers will be in action this weekend in Trinidad and Tobago and on home soil respectively.

The local footballers will come up against Anguilla from 4:00 PM in the Caribbean Football Union Boys’ U14 Challenge Series, which runs from August 16 - 25th in Trinidad.

The VI’s other games will be against Turks and Caicos Islands on Saturday, August 17, US Virgin Islands on Monday, August 19; and Dominica on Tuesday, August 20.

The VI squad is captained by Miles Penn and includes Trevon Stevens, Emery Jones, Carlon Stewart, Kyrique Matthew, Zaed Chalwell, Quinn Pascoe, Quacey Cooper, Kerjahni Prevost, Devin Daley, Akhori Sebastian, T'YRique Charles, Sha'Mauri Lennard, Ethan Mohamed, Caedon Fraites, Audony Gangoo, Joel Gilford, James Tucker Davis, Delanie Gordon, and Bryson Walters.

Also part of the VI contingent in Trinidad are Cassandra J. Gregg (Head Coach), Thomas Albert (Assistant Coach), Morris Mark (Goal Keeper Coach/Kit Manager), Jeffery Demming (Trainer), Chester James (Physio), and Priya Mohamed (Team Manager).

Youth Summer Slam Classic Basketball Tournament

Meanwhile, the first annual Youth Summer Slam Classic Tournament will run from today, Friday, August 16 to Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

The tournament is organised by Sports Vision Academy (SVA) and has drawn participation from Antigua, St Eustatius, and St Thomas and St Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

Teams will be doing battle in the 9-12 and 13-15 age groups. Four games are slated for today, starting at 4:00 PM.

SVA All Stars Jr, representing Tortola, will be in action against Wadadli Elite Jr of Antigua in the 9-12 age category from 6:00 PM.

SVA All Stars Sr (Tortola) will take on Diker Sports of Statia from 7:30 PM in the 13-15 age category.
