VI curfew now from 8:00pm to 5:00am for next 7 days

The curfew in the Virgin Islands has been reduced by three (3) hours for the next 14 days, beginning today, Thursday, September 24, 2020.

The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has advised the National Security Council to impose a new restricted curfew for a period of seven (7) days from 8:00pm to 5:00am daily, Government announced late Wednesday, September 23, 2020.

It said in a press release that the Curfew Act 2017, Imposition of Curfew (No. 33) Order 2020 will take effect on September 24 to October 1 and will be subject to requirements in the Public Health (COVID-19 Control and Suppression Measures) Order.

Restriction on vessels

The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands also decided that persons will be prohibited from operating vessels in Territorial waters between 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. except for ferry operators who may travel between the hours of 5:00am and 8:00pm.

It added that persons will be prohibited from operating a vessel within the maritime exclusion zones except where authorised by the Joint Task Force.

"Moreover, a person will be prohibited from operating a vessel across the Territorial borders except where authorised by the Governor in consultation with the Minister for Health and Social Development."

'Manage it'

These decisions come following an announcement by the Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) during the Fourteenth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth House of Assembly on September 22, 2020.

The Health Minister stated that the current phase of the Territory’s pandemic response ‘Manage It’ called for a renewed emphasis on personal responsibility and the protection of all communities through effective enforcement of border control and Suppression Measures.

He also explained that the Territory’s best defense remains to incorporate simple yet effective prevention strategies into everyone’s daily life while he updated the public on the new recoveries and significant decrease in active COVID-19 cases.

As of September 23, the total number of recorded cases of COVID-19 stands at 71; the total number of persons recovered is 62; the total number of active cases is 8; and one (1) death has been recorded.

Members of the public are urged to continue to report any suspicious activity by dialing 311 and to adhere to all safety measures such as hand hygiene, cough etiquette, wearing face masks in public, physical distancing and minimising social gatherings. Failure to comply may result in fines and penalties.

Persons who are experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19 are encouraged to contact the Medical Hotline at 852-7650 for an assessment and an appointment for COVID-19 testing. Common symptoms include fever, cough, headache, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, muscle aches, or difficulty breathing.

I really like this move...Now they start thinking... 7 days, assess, increase gradually until we get to midnight. By October 7th all businesses should be opened.."all"...I think Midnight Curfew should be until the end of the year...

Because we got the government we voted for. The last one was a sleeping (zzzzzzzing) government, now we have one that hard at work even while we sleeping. That's the Government we need in these times, because COVID-19 (the enemy) don't sleep, so why should the Government?! Kudos and God speed Andrew & team

Them bars need turning into restaurants selling local drinks. If you bar owners want to make a living you better start thinking differently.

Nothing is happening to the bars or clubs. Why people of the BVI can not get it. The new norm is work, home. Bars and clubs are closed world wide. Some cities, countries are closing because they opened these businesses to soon. Don't let us become a statistic. Work then home. Spend time with your wife and children. This is the new way. Sorry if it does not sound good. You saw for August what happened. People went crazy from wet fete, beach fete, boat race and so on. Then the BVI had 49 cases. Go home. Bars and clubs will be closed for a while.
