EAST END, Tortola, VI- VG United made it a double cup celebration to end the season, on Sunday, August 11, 2024, with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Wolues FC to add the President’s Cup to their FA Cup victory over the same opposition a month ago.

The Virgin Gorda-based team had raced into an early lead in just the 14th minute when Shamar Ollivierre was quickest to react to a loose ball, following a corner and forced it over the line from close range.

The Wolues though are not only League champions but also the Presidents Cup holders, having beaten VG 1-0 last season, and were in no mood to let their hands slip off the trophy without a battle. After a spell of intense pressure, they got their chance to level the game, but Phil Nelson’s penalty kick was saved.

Own goal seals Wolues’ fate

An own goal from the Wolues following another set piece settled the tie and destination of the cup in the fifty-eight minute, much to the delight of the travelling fans.

“We knew it would be tough against the league champions, but we also knew that of the four games Wolues have lost this season, threw of them have been to us!” exclaimed VG Manager Jermain Abrams.

“We stood up to what they threw at us and stuck to our task for the whole game. Congratulations go to the whole team as well as the coaches, Richie Morton, Glenn Bascombe, the Physio, Erwin Telemaque and all our supporters. The Wolues should also get credit for their tenacity and desire, but we took our chances, matching their intensity and kept the ball better when it mattered,” Abrams added.

Phil Nelson of the Wolues noted: “There was not that much in the game and not really many chances for either team. It was very disappointing to concede from two set pieces and we need to focus more to make sure that does not happen again. The game may have been different had my penalty not been saved just before halftime, but it was a decent save, and it was not to be, congratulations again to VG, they are a tough opponent. Despite the recent disappointing losses, we are immensely proud of our season, winning our first title and we welcome the break now before coming back and giving it our all again.”

Wolues successfully protest humiliating defeat to One Love

One Love United and VG United were initially slated to contest the final of the 2024 President’s Cup; however, Wolues protested their 1-7 defeat in the Semi-Finals to One Love and have been awarded the win by the BVI Football Association (BVIFA).

Wolues had protested that One Love United had ineligible players on their roster when the game was played on June 23, 2024.

According to reports, Wolues reportedly took issue with national players Miquel Marshall, Justin Smith, and Tyler Forbes playing for One Love. All three players had scored in the game.

One Love reportedly produced evidence of the contrary; however, a “vote” was reportedly taken on the issue and Wolues were given the nod.

Information reaching our News Centre is that One Love has written CONCACAF on the matter.
