UPDATE: Tsunami advisory for VI cancelled

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Tsunami advisory issued for the Virgin Islands earlier this evening, Saturday, February 8, 2025, has been discontinued.

An update from the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) says the tsunami advisory has been cancelled as "there is no longer a threat" to the Virgin Islands. 

The advisory was issued this evening following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the Honduran coast.

Tsunami advisory issued for the VI

-'no evacuation needed at this time'- DDM

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A tsunami advisory is in effect for the Virgin Islands (VI), the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has confirmed. 

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake was reported off the coast of Honduras around 6:30 PM this evening Saturday, February 8, 2025.

The advisory has also been issued for Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. 

DDM is monitoring

"This is an advisory. DDM is monitoring," the DDM statement said, continuing, "A strike-slip type of fracture/earthquake occurred. No evacuation notice issued. The Puerto Rico Seismic Network is running a forecast and will inform the DDM  of the results shortly."

Meanwhile, strong currents are expected at sea and along the coast around 9:48 PM tonight. 

Other areas remain under potential threat

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred about 125 miles south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands at a depth of about 6 miles.

Haiti, Belize and the Bahamas remain under a potential threat of a tsunami. There are no reports of injuries or damage.

    Poor communication. The sirens didn't go off. We didn't get a text. If this were more serious many people would be dead. I spoke to a few people and they had no clue what was going on. We have to do better than this.

      Yes, the only audible text warning I received was the one stating the warning was canceled. The Vitema one is email so didn’t hear that one either.

      The sirens didn’t go off because there was a tsunami advisory, not a tsunami warning. The siren only goes off if there is a tsunami warning.
