HAMILTON, Bermuda- Strong winds and rain battered Bermuda on Monday, June 6, 2022, as Tropical Storm Alex brought gusts of up to 60 knots (69 mph) to the island.

A Tropical Storm Warning issued by the Bermuda Weather Service ended on Monday afternoon, with a Small Craft Warning then issued through to Tuesday afternoon.

Before the storm brushed past the British overseas territory it had killed three people and knocked out electricity in Cuba and flooded parts of Florida.

The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season had grown to near hurricane force late Sunday, reaching 70 mph (110 kph), but weakened Monday as it raced past north of Bermuda.

Bermuda’s government Twitter account said crews were clearing downed trees from roads.

Alex partially emerged from the remnants of Hurricane Agatha, which made landfall on Mexico’s southern Pacific Coast last week, killing at least nine people and leaving five missing as it moved over land.

Tropical Storm Alex maintaining winds of 65 mph as it passes Bermuda

After flirting near hurricane strength Sunday night, Tropical Storm Alex lost a little power early Monday morning, June 6, 2022, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Tropical Storm Alex entered the Atlantic Saturday, becoming the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season.

"The biggest impact we saw was a Potential Tropical Cyclone One as it made landfall over Southwest Florida" Saturday morning," said Rodney Wynn, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Southwest Florida.

Almost 15 inches of rain was recorded in Hollywood and Margate, 14.85 and  14.79 respectively, according to the National Weather Service, Miami.

How likely is Alex to strengthen?

Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph, with higher gusts.

Weakening is forecast, and Alex is expected to become an extratropical low later today. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles from the center. The Bermuda Airport reported a sustained wind of 39 mph with a gust to 59 mph within the last hour. A Bermuda Weather Service buoy at Crescent Reef, just north of Bermuda, recently reported a sustained wind of 55 mph, with a gust to 72 mph. An automated station at the Bermuda Heliport reported a sustained wind of 49 mph and a gust to 67 mph.

Alex is expected to continue moving over cooler waters in an environment of increasing vertical wind shear and dry air. It is likely to become extratropical or a remnant low later today.

@@PT. If we are talking about a hurricane, why are you completely flipping the subject and calling our female students slow and calling PT a bush man? This has all of the insulting name calling of a non Black person, a racist, and is uncalled for. It sounds like you don’t want anyone talking about YOUR governor from the UK. How typical of you.
