Brilliant cultural displays highlight NLBC’s Int’l Night
DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – An impressive and patriotic display of national colours, traditional costumes, national dishes and similarly themed items marked the New Life Baptist Church’s now annual International Night at its Duffs Bottom location yesterday, April 12, 2014.
Formerly Caribbean Night, the event has since blossomed into the International Night as a result of the church’s rapidly expanding membership and its accompanying diversity. Over ten countries were represented at yesterday’s event, including Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, St Kitts & Nevis, Guyana, Jamaica, St Vincent & the Grenadines, St Lucia, Montserrat, the United States of America and the Virgin Islands.
Head of the NLBC, Bishop John I. Cline best described the union of so many different cultures in one location as a ‘melting pot’ and a ‘time of fun’. “When we come together for what the BVI represents in terms of culture it’s a melting pot of culture and we here try to promote that in creating unity in terms of national dress and the national foods and just the fellowship that we put together,” Bishop Cline commented.
A supportive crowd that numbered in the hundreds lapped up the entertainment and the wide variety of food and drinks on offer as Bishop Cline sought to highlight that the central message being conveyed to the wider community was one of unity. He pointed out that the better persons are able to know their neighbours, then the easier it is for them to be able to form a more harmonious community in the Virgin Islands.
The obvious national pride among the participants was clearly visible in their displays, especially during the Parade of Nations segment which featured a ‘dance past’ of sorts as flag waving contingents displayed their national costumes before a boisterous and appreciative audience.
The event also featured various cultural presentations by each group such as dances, songs skits and the very well received traditional plat pole by the Virgin Islands contingent.
Bishop Cline indicated that the International Night will continue to evolve as the church hosts the event in coming years and promised that something new will be on display in the future.
