UPDATE: Sweet Redemptive SDA on stream with new building construction
When contacted recently, Pastor of the Sweet Redemptive SDA, Howard Simon stated, “we’re just casting the cistern and I think the preparations are going pretty smoothly."
Much of the work is being done through the “volunteerism and commitment” of members of the church, according to Pastor Simon.
The building is expected to hold in excess of four hundred persons once it is finally completed, with the main sanctuary on the upper floor holding some 280 persons while the lower floor, which is expected to be used predominantly for the children of the church, should house some 150 persons.
Pastor Simon was hesitant about giving a final or projected cost for construction work being done at the location in Slaney and would only say, “it’s not final because we’re trying to get as much done through the volunteers… the members, so what we’re basically trying to do is just to focus on [acquiring] material at the best rate right now.”
He added that the current aim is to have the first phase completed, following which an assessment of the situation is expected to be completed.
Regarding parking facilities for the building after its construction, Pastor Simon said, “the present structure is going to provide us with much more parking than we had.”
He advised that the new building will be much further in from the road than the previous one and even though there could have been more space allotted for this, the church was doing much better than they had previously, Pastor Simon said.
This news site was informed that parking would be available across the road from the facility in addition to the front area of the building once completed as well.

New ground broken for Sweet Redemptive SDA Church
- Church recalls having to hold services in bushes
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The leaders and congregation of the Sweet Redemptive Seventh-Day Adventist Church have more than one reason to make a joyful noise but especially because they would soon had a permanent place of worship, a wonderful testimony compared to the days when they had to keep services in the bushes.
The ground breaking ceremony for the church building construction was held yesterday October 14, 2012 in Slaney where Third District Representative, Hon. Julian Fraser RA was on hand to witness and participate in the symbolic event.
Hon. Fraser expressed that the church should not get discouraged with the time that it may take to construct the building as this takes time and noted that the congregation was loaded with tenacity as they were determined to be on their own despite encouragement to join other congregations.
He added that the church needed the government to have the nearby road re-aligned in an effort to enhance the function and value of the facility. “The church,” he said “will be able to function as it is intended to function, in peace and quiet.”
Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Mrs Prudence Mathavious, represented Minister Myron V. Walwyn.
She said the Minister realises the unique role churches play and have played in nurturing youths and adults alike. She thanked and encouraged the church in their efforts and prayed that their sanctuary would be built in quick time.
Church member, Ms Jacky Small, in offering a brief history of the development of the church noted that the church in its infancy had once held services in the bushes. The over two-hundred member strong church, she noted, would now able to call the spot that housed their former temporary location a permanent home.
Executive Secretary of the North Caribbean Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists, Pastor Henry Peters, offered prayers and words of encouragement to the congregation for their efforts. He stressed the importance of the church having a permanent sanctuary, noting that it is used as a worship centre, serves as a house of prayer and a place of deployment for disciples.
The firm contracted for the architectural work is New Era Draughting Services with Samuel K Jones listed as the architect.
