Tearful & apologetic Simeon Pope found guilty on seven charges
Simeon Pope was today, March 15, 2013 found guilty on seven counts of obtaining property by deception by a jury of 9 in the High Court.
Mr Pope was charged and tried for allegations of defrauding three men who alleged that they had paid him sums of monies for the purchase of used government vehicles.
The trial commenced in the High Court on March 12, 2013 before Justice Albert Redhead.
A tearful Pope was very apologetic after the verdict was read and said he was only a human being. Judge Redhead labelled Pope as "stubborn" and remaned him to prison until Monday March 18, 2013. Pope desperately pleaded with the judge to not be remanded, saying he has a mentally challenged stepson to take care of as well as Ms Eileene L. Parsons, who is physically challenged.
Before the delivery of the verdict, Pope had changed his plea to guilty on each of the counts he was accused of after the judge hard started his summation on the trial, but this appeared to be a case of too little, too late.
Attorney Stephen Daniels is to offer mitigation on behalf of Pope on Monday. The accused faces some 10 years imprisonment.
Pope was charged with seven counts of obtaining property allegedly by deception in March 2010. Allegations were that he obtained money under false pretense as he collected monies from a number of persons for the purchase of used Government-owned vehicles
It is alleged that each complainant gave cash down payments as he requested, but were never given the vehicles which resulted in reports being made to the Police when they did not receive the vehicles neither any sort of reimbursements.
Mr Peter Robertson, Mr Alvin James and Mr Harold John were the three men who had filed the complaints against Pope and they all had given evidence in the High Court during the trial.
Pope had pleaded not guilty but had not denied that he took the monies from the three men.
The prosecution was led by Senior Crown Council Ms Christlyn Benjamin while Pope had chosen to lead his own defense.
