UPDATE: Suspended local BVIHSA doctor resigns!

There are expressed concerns publicly, internally and to this news site that a senior manager within the BVIHSA has been the root cause of conflict especially at Peebles Hospital. The most recent expressed concern that prompted sources to say there is a dire for intervention at the highest level of the Government was the alleged verbal abuse and insulting of a HIMA doctor in open view and hearing of junior staff, visitors and patients at Peebles Hospital. A local doctor, who has tendered his resignation, also pointed out that he could no longer continue working with the said senior manager. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Virgin Islands News Online has been reliably informed by its many sources within the health services sector that a local doctor, who was suspended by the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) for reasons still unknown to this news site, has tendered his resignation.

The doctor, who is said to be a community doctor and also has a private practice at a popular medical service entity, allegedly tendered his resignation to the BVIHSA on Friday April 26, 2013.

This development comes just about a month after long serving doctor at Peebles Hospital, Anthony Ibrahim, decided to call it quits allegedly because of internal squabbles.

According to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online, the VIslander doctor made it clear to the BVIHSA that he could no longer continue working with a senior manager within the BVIHSA.

The General Medical Practitioner could not be reached for comment and the BVIHSA did not respond to this news site’s queries at the time of publication.

Chief Executive Officer of the BVIHSA Ms Darlene Carty-Baptiste had previously said the matter was a personnel one that was being dealt with internally.

Local doctor suspended!

BVIHSA allegedly riddled with human resources challenges

At a time when the National Democratic Party (NDP) Government says that it is making every effort to improve the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) to ensure its staff and patients get the best quality care, human resource issues seem to be escalating.

Most recently Virgin Islands News Online was reliably informed that less than a month after a long serving doctor, Anthony Ibrahim, decided to call it quits allegedly because of internal squabbles, the BVI Health Services Authority management was forced to suspend the services of a local doctor. While our source indicated that no specific reason was given for the suspension, Chief Executive Officer of the BVIHSA Ms Darlene Carty-Baptiste said the matter is a personnel one that is being dealt with internally.

The VIslander doctor, a General Medical Practitioner, who seems to be in some hot sauce, was contacted, however, he said, "No comment at this time." Asked by this news site if he will be working today, April 18, 2013, he responded "I work every day." Further asked if he'll be working for the Government of the Virgin Islands today, again he responded, "I work everyday." Asked where he could be found today if one required his medical service, the doctor declined to confirm.

The doctor is said to be a community doctor who also has a private practice at a popular medical service entity.

And according to our source, "He had that coming long now." It is believed, though not confirmed, that the suspension may have stemmed from constant conflict of interest practices, according to our source within the BVIHSA.

There are expressed concerns publicly, internally and to this news site that a senior manager within the BVIHSA has been the root cause of conflict especially at Peebles Hospital. The most recent expressed concern that prompted sources to say there is a dire need for intervention at the highest level of the Government was the alleged verbal abuse and insulting of an HIMA doctor in open view and hearing of junior staff, visitors and patients at Peebles Hospital.

The same senior manager is being accused of frequently exhibiting poor human relations practices, much to the disdain of staff.

Contacted on this issue, Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton said he had no knowledge of the subject and as such couldn't comment. However, this news site understands that instructions handed down from the level of the Hon. Minister is to have the defaulting senior manager removed from the hospital. This is yet to be seen.

While I dont know the specifics and dont know if you do either, What does being a local have to do with anything? If and I say if, there is a conflict of interest or the doctor has failed to perform satisfactorily or even has had complaints made on him, these things need to be dealt with.
Too many times we try to use the local card like that means we should do whatever we want. Local or expat... procedure is procedure principle is principle. We have to raise our standards as a people and as professionals, in every field, not just settle for whatever from whoever hailing from whereever.

It have to be about money as well, who is going to pay for rent, bills, continuous education, allowing the medical person to further advance and become more knowledgable in there respective fields, thereby they would be able to provide better knowledgable service to the community. For your information continuous education cannot be provided by the college here, most of it is attained online of overseas, you have to take the cost of airfair, hotel, the cost of the program or course which in average is betweem $2000.-$7000. an allowance to spend and purchase further reading material. Medicine has a cost my dear, and the BVIHSA don't help pay half of the total cost for these continuous education courses for locals or non locals.

Hear we go again, helms of affair with BVIHSA. BVIHSA are facing two major issues & they are VERY POOR MANAGEMENT (which is not difficult to detect) and UNDERMANAGEMENT (a financial ditch). BVIHSA have been loosing money, week after week & month after month all because of poor leadership and Board Directors who have no vision for the future of the institution. Board meetings are decided @ the last minute, the input of some staff especially junior positions are studiously avoided, employees are treated unfairly, friends & family are praised with high regard & take precedence. Hon. Minister Skelton, this does not @ all sits well under your portfolio. You are the Minister of Health & Social Development and people have voiced their concerns, opinions, plights, disgusts, anger and frustrations for the past couple weeks and all of this stems, esculates from & with the Director & COMS. The Authority is doing very poorly under their leadership and principles along with the Chairman, and it continues to plunder rapidly because of their egotistical naive mentality. I'm not sure under what circumstances Dr. Local was suspended, but if the saying is "support your own" and your own are literally cutting your throats, really, what do you expect. It doesn't matter who you and what position you hold in any establishment, you're not INVINCIBLE and It applies to everybody!!. Food for thought "there are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the ROOT and it may be that he/she who bestows the largest amount of time and money on the needy is doing the most by his mode of life to produce the misery which he strives in vain to relieve"

CEO and foreign higher ups want to bring in family and friends so they need to come up with BS allegations to suspend man. Then them gonna say we have doctor shortage, and bring in them friends from abroad to fill the space. Foolishness!!! But the joke gonna be on them! Them got big hospital full for Africans and Filipino docs providing crappy services and you caan even understand what them asking you or saying half the time. NDP think its high tech computers that does treat people?!? Time will tell!!! Ask any of them politicians where they go for treatment, it aint PEEBLES and they sure as hell know why. At the end of the day it is a blessing to get out of BVIHSA, at least Doc aint gonna go down with the SSS Hot Mess when the S#@t hits the fan. Keep your head up, brighter days to come Doc.

The BVI is still living in mental slavery while professionals are subjected to physical slavery. If you go to New York the top ranked doctors works at two or three hospitals across the city and there is no mention of conflict of interest.
Workers are contracted to provide 8 to 10 hours daily and you should demand they produce during that time. But do not try to dictate what the worker should do with the next 14-16 hours of their lives. Slavery was abolished long, long ago. I thought the extra skills and experience this young doctor will get by seeing more patients would benefit the whole community. How can we hope to attract top doctors from the Caribbean with this mentality.

Most comments come from people who has been staying here in the island so long that they presume too much that giving their piece of mind is just appropriate. Most of these people are from Guyana, SVG, GRENADA, etc.
You should all go back to your own islands and clean the mess of your own government. You presume too much that staying in BVI for several years and having babies here give you the right to tell the locals how to run their business and the government. SHame on you for playing politics, talking to politicians and kissing their ass just for you to stay in this beautiful island.

To the locals, self entitlement is definitely not a good mind set. The law should apply to all, locals or expats, equally. No exemption. The rule or law might be harsh, but that is what civilize people need to follow, or we are not better than the dogs.

To the government, please be efficient. Do what is right. Service to people is not the same as politics.

To the managemnt of the BVIHSA, YOU CANNOT PLEASE EVERYBODY. KEEP CALM AND MOVE FORWARD TOWARDS CHANGE. if sending home people to their home is the right thing to do for an efficient hospital service, then send them home in the first airplane out of the island. YOU DO NOT NEED PEOPLE WHO RESIST CHANGE.

They are certainly not doing a good job unless you call giving yourself and friends raises and bonuses, and hiring NLB contractors/staff?

If the government want to run the new hospital then they need to hire competent management or the waste and stupidity will just be amplified.

Well it is clear to see that you guys love Hon. Skelton. Don't worry. We do too, and I speak for all those folks who voted to put him right where he is. You know what should give you food for thought all you VIP bloggers who are even now only half way through the new Government's term trying to sway the vote, you should ask yourselves what did Hon. D. Penn Sallah do while she was there. Now I am one for agreeing that if there are issues, Hon. Skelton is the one to deal with them today, here where we are now, but really your ugly bias is showing loud and clear. I personally can't remember a thing she did for her four years. Don't worry about Hon. Skelton, if voted out he won't be crying and ranting and raving like some did. He has a life outside of politics and one thing he is is honest.

Dr. Dawson had a strategic plan in place when he resigned. He knows exactly what he is doing. Pay close attention.

The mentality of British Virgin Islanders amazes me! You complain about foreigners coming and taking up jobs... Only 'foreigners' 'locals'. Please get over it already! The BVI is a melting pot of a wide range of nationalities from the Caribbean and other nations. It doesnt matter, the rule applies to all! Ethics, Laws and Principle same for all, not one set for the 'foreigners' and another set for the 'locals'. How many of the 'locals' want to get into health care professions? And if they do, how many return to give back wholeheartedly to their country? They remain in North America and work for better salaries and working conditions. If they return, do the most foolishness, and is the most unproductive on the job. Why? They are Locals! The rules dont apply!
When honest, hardworking, disciplined people come here to provide valuable, skilled services that limited islanders want to do cuz it is beneath them; stop ridiculing and labelling them!

I am sick of this nonsense. About Virgin Islanders do not work, can't work and do not want to behave. shut up. If you have a problemq with Virgin Islanders take care of it, leave. There is no body in your ounatry who does not want to work or who has a bad attitude. People are people everywhere. If one person acts up everybody is called down Go back where you have all perfect people. I am just tired of this crap man. You should know your place and know when to comment and when not to. Really this matter has nothing to do with you. The doctor is a Virgin Islander let them comment.

Sorry to burst you bubbles people, I am actually not on the BVI nor have any intention of working in the BVI! But I have family there....all I read is like a battle between locals and foreigners...If the '100' different nationalities decide to leave... This is a public thread and I dont need your permission to comment!

@you obviously not that keen....I AM A MEDICAL DOCTOR HAPPILY WORKING ON MY HOMELAND!Thank you. I have no interest in working in your sweet county that you locals are doing a great job of ruining yourselves. Let your people go study, and fill all your post, then you will be self sustained without any outsiders. A country whose main industry is tourism your mentality and hostility towards 'foreigners' is frightening....I definitely would not want to work in a place like that!

By the way...I am leaving tomorrow from a short visit with my relative. Enjoyed, esp. VG. I dont know how she puts up with this hostility on the job on a daily basis....She might just take your advice and 'leave'. At the end of the day it will be more 'foreigners' who will be employed! face it! On the most part, there are some really pleasant people here...

          Have a blessed day!:)

Wow!!!!! Did you say " honest, hardworking, disciplined people come here to provide valuable, skilled services that limited islanders want to do cuz it is beneath them" ?!!?!! It is obvious that you have no clue what is going on in this place. You sound STUPID!!!!! Here's a suggestion for you...... Go away and study to be a doctor, then come back and work for BVIHSA. Only then will your dumb @$Z understand what's going on. All kinda unqualified and under-qualified people they have running BVIHSA. People who they bring in with fake diploma and non-existent credentials to run amok. What you all need to realize is after these people done mash up the health services and collect a wash of money, they gonna pick themselves up and move on. Now we that live here will have to deal with the mess!!!!!! Open your eyes!!! What happen you never had to go get treatment at the hospital? YOU JUST NEED TO SHUT UP!!!!!!

he has poor relationship with his workers both nurses and doctors especilly at peebles hospital.
no body can work with this so called senior medical officer and if nothing is done to checkmate this SMO, more doctors and nurses will leave the system.
