ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The West Side Konnekshun group handed over a donation of $2500 to former cancer patient, Shaheem Richards, yesterday July 3, 2013 in a brief ceremony at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park.

The Public Relations Oficcer of the non-profit group, Deshawn Hodge, said the group was happy to make the donation and said Richards’ mother Scharmarla Springette-Richards expressed gratitude on receiving the cheque.

The group held a fundraising event on June 15, 2013 at the Benjamin A. Romney Park in West End.

Hodge indicated that there were several other projects that will be taken on by the group in the near future, including other donations to charitable causes.

West Side Konnekshun is also hosting a coastal cleanup on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 5:30 A.M. The activity starts at the Frenchman’s Cay bridge in West End and the group is asking residents to turn out in support of this worthy cause.

Fundraiser for cancer survivor a success – Hodge

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A recently held fundraiser in aid of cancer survivor, Shaheem Richards has been declared a resounding success by Public Relations Officer of the West Side Konnekshun non-profit group, Deshawn Hodge.

The event, a fish fry and exhibition basketball game, was held on June 15, 2013 at the Benjamin A. Romney Park in West End. Hodge stated that it was well attended despite the many events that were going on around the Territory at the same time.

Richards, 14, had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (ALM) and returned to the Territory from Puerto Rico fully recovered after undergoing months of intense therapy. His family was left with a medical bill amounting to $500,000 and the West Side Konnekshun group answered a call for assistance in hosting the fundraising activity.

“A lot of persons, especially East End residents, his family, his parents, all of his friends, it was well attended by persons from the whole island,” Hodge stated.

An announcement is expected shortly on the amount raised and this will be followed by a presentation to Shaheem’s family.

Hodge said the exhibition basketball games were also a big hit at the fundraiser, especially the over-40 games and patrons were already asking about the next installment even before the event had been completed. “That was very exciting,” he said.

Both parents expressed gratitude for the fundraiser, giving thanks to all the persons who came out in support while there and were also pleased about the turnout.

Hodge thanked the many persons in the community who volunteered their time and resources towards making the event a success, including the DJ, referees and business owners who made various donations.

He singled out for special thanks, the fishermen who donated their catch as part of the fish fry and found this remarkable considering that this is their main source of income.

“We will continue to pray for them and ask the public to support him,” Hodge stated while adding that this may not be the last event in aid of the young cancer survivor.

Both NDP and Andrew Fahie should be ashame of themselves, to see that it takes Deshaun "Mouse" Hodge and his group to raise money for Shaheem. Good job mouse, the Lord going richly bless you and all the others.

Why can't the public at large take on a project such as this without some 'Silly Billy' saying shame on you Government Rep? This is such a wonderful idea and something that should be emulated yet shame on you NDP and Andrew Fahie? Well, if the Government is going to take on and fund every cause, I hope 'Proud' is prepared to pay higher taxes and fees for services in this country. That is the way Hon. Fahie and company trained most of the populace, but it cannot be sustained. It is driving us in the poor house. Wake up people. Be independent so that when catastrophe comes you can get some help. Government cannot take on every cause. Wonderful Job to these young people. I can truly say I am proud to be a BVIslander today.

Good post but you back up off of wrongfully blaming Fahie for what he ain't do. We train ourselves & our children into the gimmie gimmie attitude that we have.

You need to get away. You talking things that you don't know. Fahie was more involved than you think but unlike the NDP he doesn't insist on being in the spotlight every time and for everything. People like you just have a chip on your shoulder for Fahie but he helps more than most of these fake politicians that loves seeing their pictures in the media for doing nothing more than showing up and talking crap.
