ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI –A number of local contractors are expected to participate in the project to develop the Queen Elizabeth II Park, according to Minister for Communications and Work Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool.

The Works Minister, who is also the Fourth District Representative, made the announcement this morning, November 14, 2013 at the ground breaking ceremony at the Queen Elizabeth II Park in Road Town.

During his brief remarks, Hon. Vanterpool highlighted the potential tourism benefits to be derived from the investment. He also noted that the project would go a far way in ensuring that the Virgin Islands does not become a “concrete jungle”.

“While we may know what it is like to live in a concrete jungle elsewhere, we simply cannot imagine a Virgin Islands without these green spaces, after all this is what makes the Virgin Islands beautiful for residents and attractive for our visitors,” Hon. Vanterpool declared.

“The new QEII Park is another step in the development of the city of Road Town, which is the hub of commercial activities for the residents and businesses in the British Virgin Islands,” the Minister added.

The Fourth District Representative said the project is a dream that will finally be realised for Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith whose vision it was since the National Democratic Party (NDP) was previously in government.

It was noted that Road Town is the first stop for visitors who come by way of cruise ships and ferries and that the park was at a strategic location. “It is a must visit for all visitors to the territory,” noted Hon. Vanterpool. He also stated that the Queen Elizabeth II Park will complement the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park and serve as a bigger, much improved venue with better facilities and a more attractive green space.

At a press conference on Tuesday November 12, 2013 Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith announced that government plans to move forward with the project, which according to him, will commence very soon.

Premier Smith did the symbolic turning of the sod at the brief ceremony today.

Following the official aspects of the turning of the sod ceremony, heavy earthmoving equipment drove in to begin clearing the land space.

$500,000 earmarked for Queen Elizabeth II Development Project

“In a few days I would be able to give you the exact date of beginning because they have already put tenders out …the estimate for the construction of the park at this moment is in the region of $500,000.” This was the response given to reporters by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith.

At the time he was addressing members of the media at his most recent press briefing held in his conference room on Tuesday November 12, 2013. The project of discussion was the development of the Queen Elizabeth II Park.

“We have already started to procure goods for the site in order to begin works on this project.”

The works include the restoration and expansion of the park. Once completed, it is expected to be an attractive seaside amenity to be enjoyed by all the people of this territory. The Park will also be a safe play area for children; give us much needed green open space; and contribute to our health and well-being...as the park develops more features would be added over time,” said Premier Smith.

The new park will include pathways and hard landscaping, car park, boardwalk, a lookout point, picnic area, children’s playground, water features, shaded structures and seating.

Additionally, the design improvements to the park will provide much needed public amenities in the Road Town area that will be in keeping with Government’s desire to improve Road Town’s image, according to the Premier.

Premier Smith also said the project is in line with the Government of the Virgin Islands’ vision to improve the quality of life of all residents in this Territory.

I guess all those set of retaining walls and driveways for private homes done by the other administration created revenue. At least in this case, the entire public can enjoy this venture once completed.

Is this a joke? Home many contractors can benefit from $500,000? And the the outside companies gets the millions right? That's the differents with the VIP boss. Big things for the lil man.

You sound so DUMB!! VIP spent millions on local contractors working on roads. LOOK AT THEM NOW!!!! IF the VIP was doing it right they won't need to be fixed now SMARTY! WTF? I swear you all smoking some serious s..t in this place. They need to get the same McAlpine to fix our roads while they here dealing with Prospect. Look them up, check out their work. Let's get the damn place fixed properly once and for all from bickering over bulls..t. Half of the guys getting contracts are a set of know nothings. Get the local ones who actually know something to subcontract under the main contractor then it's a win win. Qualified locals get much needed work and experience, then the people of the BVI get quality infrastructure than can withstand more than one November rain. Ignorance will kill this place STOP IT MAN! Everything is inside or outside you all just sick sick sick!! Name one BIG THING VIP did for the lil man. Who are the lil men? Aren't the lil men supposed to be in daycare and pre-school? I'm confused now.
