UPDATE: One still hospitalised following powerboat incident- Police
Some five (5) persons were taken to the medical facility on Tortola after being rescued following the mishap but four of those have since been discharged, Police Information Office Diane Drayton told Virgin Islands News Online today, July 15, 2013.
Head of the Virgin Islands Search & Rescue (VISAR), Phil Aspinall, has confirmed that there were no serious injuries following the boating accident that occurred two days ago near Jost Van Dyke (JVD).
Aspinall expressed that, according to one of the passengers on the boat, there had been a sudden mechanical failure as the boat was nearing JVD which caused the boat to stop abruptly.
Persons either fell or flew forward as a result of this but no reports of severe injuries were reported although it is believed that one passenger had to seek medical treatment for a suspected broken nose.
Six passengers were reportedly aboard the vessel at the time of the incident. “It’s just a bit of an unfortunate accident really,” Aspinall related.
It was noticed that the boat, which had also been travelling in close proximity with another, had come to an abrupt stop and the other boat turned around to render assistance but the problem had already been rectified. Passengers were later taken to West End where some persons disembarked and left for the Peebles Hospital to seek treatment.
Former Commissioner of Police, Reynell Frazer had also confirmed that his son, Brent Frazer, who was a passenger on the vessel at the time, was involved in the accident but said he could not offer any additional comments in relation to the incident at the time.
