Update: Oldest farmer Orlando Stoutt laid to rest
Family, friends and Government officials were present for the funeral of Mr. Stoutt, who hailed from Long Bay.
The service was referred to as a celebration of the life of Mr. Stoutt as many glowing tributes and recollection of his life's work, family and contribution to the farming community were highlighted.
His eulogy was read by his son Elmore Stoutt who touched on many aspects of his late father's life and highlighted what a phenomenal and hard working person he was.
One of the touching tributes came from one of Mr. Stoutt's nieces, Gwendolyn Blyden-Rubaine, who fondly referred to him as "Daddy Lando".
She said "Daddy Lando had a sense of humour that was the best; he managed to keep me laughing aloud each time we spoke. he offered many advice on many things especially on relationship, which I consider sage advice and I will cherish always."
Mrs. Blyden-Rubaine stated that Mr. Stoutt always believed in fairness and argued fiercely for what he believed in.
In another touching tribute from some of his grandchildren Sylvia, Louanna, Clayton, Dorene, Diane, Carlene, Debra, Carlton, Collene and Cillene, they referred to him as one of the strongest men they ever had a chance to know.
"We watched as he recovered from a stroke in the mid-eighties and dedicated himself to farming where he toiled faithfully and won numerous awards over the last twenty five years," their tribute read.
Following his funeral service, Mr. Stoutt was laid to rest at the Capoons Bay Cemetery.
The 93 year-old was the brother of the late former Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt, the late former legislator Prince Stoutt and father of former legislator Elmore Stoutt.
The ardent farmer was active until the time of his death and last year was awarded for being the 2010 Oldest Farmer in the Virgin Islands, for a career that he had continued for more than 27 years.
Stoutt passed away on November 17, 2011.
According to one of his sons, Melvin Stoutt, his dad was a very active man who will be greatly missed.
Looking back at his father’s life, Melvin said his dad used to work in St. John and after suffering from a stroke, he brought back his dad to the Virgin Islands.
Eight months later his dad began his illustrious farming career which he continued for 27 years till the time of his death.
