UPDATE - Mr. BVI Int’l cancelled!
This is according to Chairman/Founder of Mr. BVI International, Jeremy Fraser who stated that the show was was not getting the support of sponsors. He also noted that negativity surrounding the show made the five young men competing in the show to be wary.
Instead he is currently planning another show in August. Details for that will be made public shortly.
In a previous interview with this news agency, Fraser said five young men were vying for the title of Mr. BVI International along with some exciting prizes including $5,000 cash and the opportunity to represent the Territory at several competitions.
“We are all excited with the event. The last Mr. BVI was held in 1974, and prior to that in 1962 and 1964,” he explained. “The sole purpose of creating the Mr. BVI show is to encourage the young men of the community to broaden their horizons; to help out in the community and to extend their educational status.”
Tristan Creque, Glenroy Charles, Stephon Mactavious, Hashim Lewis, and Karan Paul would have been in competing in a number of segments - Swimwear; Dare to Wear where the contestants will don futuristic outfits made from recycled materials; Career Wear; Cultural Wear; Question and Answer; Personal and Public Interviews, which will be done prior to the show and Tuxedo Wear.
According to Fraser, apart from the cash prize, the winner would also have the chance to represent the Virgin Islands (VI) in China where the Mr. World competition is scheduled for next month. He further stated that the winner will also participate in the Mr. Caribbean International that will be held in Jamaica in October; Mr. Caribbean in Trinidad and Mr. Caribbean USA in California.
Asked why he’s investing in the show, Fraser in a previous interview with this news agency had said, “I am tired of hearing all the negative stuff of who these young men are. So why not have a show that will illustrate to society that they can be a positive influence to society. Many of them I spoke with have ambitions and I think the show is a step in the right direction.”
And cognizant of the fact that individuals may criticize the show because it involves young men, Fraser added, “they need to give these young men a chance. I have always learnt that if you don’t have something good to say, say nothing at all.”
The age range of the young men in the competition was between 17 and 29, and the slogan for the show is “Rather than settling for less, we will strive for the best”.
