PROVIDENCE, Guyana – Leeward Islands Hurricanes crashed to their second straight innings defeat of the Regional First Class Championship when they went down by an innings and 30 runs to defending champions Guyana Jaguars on Monday November 16, 2015.

Starting the final day of the second round encounter on 215 for three and with an uphill battle to save the game, Hurricanes were dismissed for 299, about 20 minutes before lunch to concede defeat at the National Stadium at Providence.

Only last week in St Kitts, Hurricanes were hammered by an innings and 23 runs by Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, inside three days at Warner Park. This time around, however, they put up a lot more fight with Nkrumah Bonner converting his overnight 58 into a top score of 89 while Orlando Peters failed to add to his 25 at the start and wicketkeeper Jaison Peters also scoring 25.

On Sunday, Trinidadian import Daron Cruickshank struck 57, Sherwin Peters, 39, and Shane Jeffers, 31.

Hurricanes were wrecked by 20-year-old left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie who picked up five for 85 to complete his maiden ten-wicket haul in his second first class game. He finished with figures of 11 for 105 following his first innings exploits of six for 20 and was supported by off-spinner Steven Jacobs who claimed three for 97.

Hurricanes’ fate was evident from early once Orlando Peters edged the first ball of the day behind off Jacobs.

Bonner and captain Steve Liburd (10) added 39 for the fifth wicket before the Jamaican right-hander drove Motie’s second ball of the morning to Shiv Chanderpaul at cover, with the score on 254.

Bonner faced 168 deliveries in 171 minutes at the crease and counted 14 fours and one six.

Thereafter, only Jaison Peters showed any resistance, lashing five fours in a 59-ball knock as Hurricanes lost their last five wickets for just 42 runs, with Motie and Jacobs wrecking the innings.

Hurricanes blowing hot & cold against Jaguars

The Leeward Islands began to fight back against the Guyana Jaguars, trailing by 119 runs heading into day four of the second round match in the Regional First Class Championship at the National Stadium at Providence on Sunday November 15, 2015.

Emerging leg spinner Gudakesh Motie unleashed his best bowling effort in only his second first class match as Guyana Jaguars continued to stamp their authority over Leeward Islands Hurricanes, producing a six wicket haul that destroyed the Hurricanes first innings for a paltry 85 runs, 334 runs short of Guyana’s mammoth first innings total of 419 for nine declared.

However, half centuries from Nkrumah Bonner and Daron Cruickshank inspired a courageous fight back, lifting the visitors to 215 for three in their second innings after the Jaguars enforced the follow on.

Still, Leewards trail by 119 runs with seven second innings wickets in hand and are likely to play for a draw when the match enters its final day today, November 16, 2015.

The visitors were unable to recover from their overnight score of 48 for four and only succeeded in adding 37 runs before losing the remaining six wickets ahead of the lunch break.

Motie, the former West Indies under 19 player, picked his way through the Leewards fragile batting line-up, snatching up two wickets when the score was on 26 and another two with the score on 84, to finish with six wickets, conceding 20 runs from 13.2 overs, seven of which were maidens.

Opener Sherwin Peters with a top score of 28 and Captain Steve Liburd, who scored 23, were the only batsmen to score more than 11 runs.

Facing a huge first innings deficit, Leewards gave a better account of themselves in the second innings which started before lunch.

A carefully compiled 57 from Cruickshank, an aggressive 58 from Bonner and three half century partnerships, scripted a solid second innings response.

A stubborn opening stand of 50 between Peters (39) and Shane Jeffers (31) was early indication that Leewards had not yet thrown in the towel.

Jeffers was severe on Ronsford Beaten but the Guyanese pacer got his revenge by uprooting his stumps to end the opening stand.

Cruickshank, batted for 11 minutes, faced 83 balls and scored nine fours before he was trapped lbw to Motie.

He and Peters consolidated with a second wicket stand of 65.

Bonner, who has already hit nine fours and a six for his unbeaten 58 and Orlando Peters, 25 not out, have already complied 80 runs for the third wicket.
