VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Miss Gorgeous 2013 is Ms Vonda Johnson, a mother of nine, who gained the audience's and most importantly the judges' nod when the annual pageant was held last evening, February 23, 2013 at the Catholic Community Centre in Virgin Gorda.

Ms Johnson, who took some moments to realise that she had indeed won, also won the prizes for Miss Popularity and Best Evening Wear.

Contestant #1 Shearine George won the prize for Best Introduction and Best Performing Talent and was also named Miss Congeniality while Contestant #3 Wendy George received the prize for Best Lingerie.

The event was held under the theme "It's A Madi Gras affair!" and delivered on its promise of an evening of elegance, creativity and excitement.

From the get-go, when the contestants come out with their introductory dance to the music of Beyonce’s “Run The World (Girls)” and Rihanna’s “Where Have You Been” and then their introductory speech, it was clear that the full house at the Catholic Community Centre was in for a treat. Contestant #1 Shearine George was particularly impressive during her introduction and it was not surprise when she was adjudged to have won an award for it.

The Lingerie Wear segment definitely had the audience’s full attention except for when someone’s chair collapsed when Ms Johnson was on stage looking like “Catwoman”, with the whip and all. That segment was of course won by Ms Wendy George, who was dressed as a policewoman wielding handcuffs and baton.

The Talent Segment was particularly entertaining and maybe even surprising and “eyebrow raising” especially with the satirical piece by Ms Shearine George who gave life to a garbage can advocating not only for a cleaner environment but also for improvement and accountability in several areas, including a certain pageant committee. The “garbage can” also warned about people talking certain things because she was always there…”listening”. Repeatedly stating that “Them Talking Thrash”, Ms George spoke of a certain “HR person” at one of the popular resorts on the island who had “jumped ship” and that “now the retirees not getting pay…is thrash!”, a certain calypsonian that should have collected her $20 grand…”ayo need to stop talking trash”.

Ms Johnson then came out with a message for ladies to take care of their bodies and their “man” in order to keep him. Dragging on to stage a stuffed mannequin that was supposed to depict an “overweight” woman, Ms Johnson boasted about having nine children and still being able to keep her figure. “Feed him…home cooked food,” sent the crowd into an uproar and she also noted the importance of spending quality time, exercising and “keeping it tight”.

Ms Wendy George chose to do the song “Halo” by Beyonce and did quite a good job at it, according to the crowd’s reaction.

Finally it came down to the announcement of the winner, “Contestant number 2,” the MC shouts over the microphone. There is loud cheer and applause from the audience but the three ladies stand still as if frozen until finally a late reaction of surprise and tears from Ms Johnson on being told that she had won.

“I was totally shocked. I had sworn that Shearine George had won,” Ms Johnson told Virgin Islands News Online.

Noting that she had participated in Miss Gorgeous 2005 and 2007, placing first runner up in the latter contest, Ms Johnson said it felt good to have finally won. “No matter how many times you have tried and failed, you can keep on going and no matter what age you are, you feeling young and feel like you have the strength to do what you want to do, go ahead and do it,” was what Ms Johnson wanted persons to understand about her participation and eventual victory.

Asked if that was it for pageantry, Ms Gorgeous 2013 sharply replied “unless they have a pageant for older women.”

The 2013 Miss Gorgeous, Vonda Johnson, receives a trip to a Caribbean destination for 2 with $500.00 spending money, an official crown and ash, spa treatment, bouquet of flowers, official trophy and other tangible prizes and appearances.

The non finalists won themselves a bouquet of flowers, spa treatment, official trophy and other tangible prizes

Meanwhile, the Pageant didn’t exactly start “8:30 P.M. sharp” as was promised by the committee but at least did well to get it underway at exactly 8: 27 P.M. and the segments were fairly tight knitted and made further entertaining with the humour of MC “Shello”.

Apart from that, there were the performances of the St. Thomas Majorettes, Ca'ssandra and Tortola-based reggae singer Maccabee. Ca’ssandra opened with Adele’s “Find Someone Like You” and ended with her own single “I Rise”. Maccabee delivered two smooth songs in “Give Thanks and Praise” and “Beautiful”.

The 2013 Miss Gorgeous Pageant was sponsored by the Virgin Gorda Festival Committee, Shoe Essence, Creative Things and Top Priority Security Services.

So Number 2's platform was all about how to keep a man?Sad!!!!! JUST SAD! How about telling women to educate and empower themselves so they can be independent. Too often women do things to please man. You can do all you want-cook, wash, clean, keep your body right, when the man ready he will STILL leave! Women need to stop doing things to keep man. Empower and develop ya'll selves first.

I cannot believe that the Catholic church community center would affiliate themselves in any way with such a class-less show. Why on earth are these women modeling private bedroom attire before an audience in order to gain a frivolous title. Is this what the church is now promoting? Sickening! Have a show that values women and their worth, not a show that further shows the depravity of society and women as sex symbols. Cha, these women didn't even look good in those outfits!

Ridiculous!!!!!........Last I checked, Adam and Eve had on no clothing but anyways.........I no longer speak on behalf of any of the contestants but I damn sure will speak for myself. Mother of 9 and proud of myself!!!!!! I am not selling my body............ just showing that at 44 with so many children and NO SURGERIES to look the way that I do CAN BE DONE. Why does everything have to be about SEX? Also, the show was not held in the CHURCH.....it was rented for space in the BOTTOM building........not even next door to the church so what is your problem? and for all of you who do not know the concept of the show, IT IS NOT ABOUT WHOM IS THE PRETTIEST.............I know myself worth sweeties. I am an educated woman and mother, not a drop out as I am sure some of you are. I had my kids after I graduated with a dipolma, not a G.E.D. I went to College and studied business management and now at 44 I am enrolled at the Ashford University to obtain my BA in Hospitality. Soon to open my own day care. As for you (REALLY?) this is why you need to go to the shows and stop flapping your gums............my talent was about a struggle I went through in life where my best friend now known as a smurfet in my book betrayed me with my man............at the end of the talent just to make it fun, I said I have the vaccination for all smurfets so I listed what woman should be doing to help keep their men. Next time, pay your money to see and hear for yourself and not judge by "a books cover'......meaning the title in the news paper. Its only 20 bucks to get inn........better yet, PARTICIPATION FOR THE FESTIVAL IS A PLUS and as for you (1) your comment simply makes no sense to me therefore you're not even worth a reply.......as for you (big girls rule), it depends on just how big you are!!! nothing wrong with being big.... I have a daughter who is plus size and looks damn good so I am not sure if you are making an assumption that I am discriminating, now......BIG AND SLOPPY? NOW THAT'S ANOTHER STORY. Is that you? i won the crown and it is as simple as that. Do not lose any sleep over it because I am not. Thank you Margo and the rest that wished me well. Oh! before I go, as for you, as you spell it apalled............BEFORE YOU JUDGE AND CRITICIZE, PLEASE GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND TAKE A SPELLING COURSE OR SOMETHING.......THE WORD IS APPALLED............Don't get it twisted. Better yet, use the spell check. It helps. Good night, signing off as VONDA-KAY, who knows my worth and not hide behind fake names to make a ridiculous comment on a post....... #kisses.............
