MARINA CAY, VI- Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) can now confirm that the man found dead in a dinghy drifting between Marina Cay and Great Camanoe on Saturday morning, July 27, 2024, has been identified as Jamal Freeman aka ‘Uncle’ of Long Look.

The discovery of the body of Freeman, 29, was made shortly after 7:00 AM.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in a press release today, July 28, 2024, said it is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Freeman.

The now deceased was wanted by police in January this year for escaping custody and was subsequently taken into custody in April.

The RVIPF said Freeman’s family was notified and provided the necessary support “during this difficult time”.

Police appeal to public for info

It is also appealing to the boating community and the general public for any information that could assist this investigation.

“If you were near Great Camanoe during the early hours of July 27 or have any relevant information, please come forward.”

Persons can confidently call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-8477 (TIPS) or the RVIPF Intelligence Department at 368-9339. Police said all information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

"The RVIPF extends our deepest condolences to Jamal Freeman's family and friends," the RVIPF stated.

UPDATE: RVIPF confirms discovery of dead male in dinghy

Police in the Virgin Islands (VI) have confirmed the discovery of a male's body, which was found drifting on a dinghy today, Saturday, July 27, 2024.

In a statement this evening, police said an unresponsive male was found by the RVIPF's Marine Unit at around 7:00 am, drifting on the dingy between Marina Cay and Great Camanoe.

The male was then transported to Dr. Orlando Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While the circumstances surrounding the death remains unknown, efforts are underway to ascertain the man’s identity.

We will bring more information as it becomes available.

Dead man reportedly found floating in dinghy in VI waters

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Information coming into Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) is that the body of a black male was today Saturday, July 27, 2024, discovered floating in a dinghy in VI waters somewhere off the coast of Marina Cay.

Sources have told our newsroom that earlier today, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Marine Department was alerted of the dead man floating in a vessel in the Marina Cay area, however, when police arrived at the scene the body had reportedly floated away.

Our News Centre understands that current rough waves reportedly took the dinghy elsewhere, ahead of it being discovered by local police. 

It remains unclear how long the body has been floating, the owner of the vessel or the identity of the dead man.

Our news centre will bring more information as it becomes available.
