SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- A neat all round performance by Malaki Smith spurred his team Cherry Ghut Crushers to a 22-14 victory over Parsons Punishers in the final of the 7-12 years category of the Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club (SCBBC) Christmas Extravaganza last evening December 18, 2012.

The other final, the 13-16 years category, was not played as Parsons Defenders were declared champions before tip off on account that they had already beaten the other two teams in the group.

Meanwhile, Cherry Ghut Crushers saw a strong early challenge from Parsons Punishers but the latter team could not keep up the steam as 9-year-old Malaki Smith worked his way to MVP status and and easy win for his team in the end.

Smith, a student of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School, sunk 10 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, made 3 steals, 2 assists and a block.

Cherry Ghut Crushers were presented with the championship trophy by committee member of the SCBBC, Mrs Cecelia Hodge.

"The team played pretty good...it really feels good this year to win the championship because we didn't win any games last year," commented Crushers' coach Rajah Smith. "Going forward they will be a force to reckon with."

Smith said the team only had six players for the final but discipline was key to achieving victory despite the lack of players. "They listened to the coach and they were rewarded so they feel very good and I explained to them that it was due to team work that they won."

The coach of Parsons Punishers, Nathan Rodney, said his team lost focus along the way. "They were playing a little aggressive from the start but I guess they lost that passion and desire to win the championship and I guess that's why they couldn't win."

Rodney encouraged the players, however, to continue to play the game and develop their talent. "These guys are really talented, they have a lot of potential, so I would tell them keep working at it."

Parsons Defenders in defence of Basketball title this evening

With nothing to lose and everything to play for, Pockwood Pond Predators are expected to show up hungry for victory even though it will be against defending champions Parsons Defenders in the SCBBC Christmas tournament this evening December 18, 2012 at the Sea Cows Bay basketball court.

The two teams will be contesting the championship game in the 13-16 years category from 6 P.M.

The game is to follow the championship game in the 7-10 years category. That game is scheduled to tip off at 5 P.M and will see Parsons Punishers taking on Cherry Ghut Crushers.

Coaches and players must be on time to avoid forfeiture of games.

Basketball coach and organiser Mr Milton Mc Lean said he was pleased that a number of youths are now taking interest in playing the game of basketball but noted that he would like to see other Districts organise tournaments for their youth.
