UPDATE: Locals to get upfront payments this Festival season
This assurance was given by Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn yesterday January 23, 2014 at the occasion of the releasing of the theme and slogan for the Diamond Jubilee Festival celebrations of 2014.
The celebrations of Festival 2013 were hit left, right and centre by tardy and untimely payments to persons who were to have been paid for services of some sort. As a result, a number of performers, bands and groups insisted that for this year the festival committee would have had to bow to contract agreements as drafted by the bands and groups rendering their services.
Hon. Walwyn, while alluding to the exceptional job done by committee Chairman Mr Marvin Blyden, said that the budget for the celebrations this year has not been increased. He however noted that government remains committed to subsidizing if, when or where necessary.
According to the Honourable Minister, the Department of Culture has been designated as the official secretariat for all matters of 60th Annual Festivals activities of 2014. “All things regarding festival 2014 would be coming out of the secretariat,” Hon. Walwyn stated.
This would include it being the main point for things ranging from applications to payments. According to the Minister, coming out from occurrences and critical analysis of the past, the Festival can be more cost effective.
The Minister assured residents and visitors alike that while plans are currently in their infancy stages, the celebrations this year, though shorter in terms of the number of days, will be sweeter.
