UPDATE - Jayque Hopkins & CeRayiah Authurton are 2012 Prince & Princess! [Photoslide Included]
The pageant which began a little after 3 p.m. at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall, commenced with the eight pairs fully engaged in an introduction number of which Contestants #6 were awarded best dancers; Kyle Leader and Kiara Woodley.
The introductory segment, where the contestants were advised to introduce themselves to the audience, the top prize for this segment was given to the newly crowned Prince and Princess.
The show was very competitive and in accordance with one of the viewers in the audience, “this is the tightest show I’ve seen in a long time.”
The show, moving very brisk and on time, went straight in to the Cultural Wear segment. In this segment, the blends of the colours were eye-catching, the designs were mesmerizing, the judges definitely had no easy job last evening.
Gracing the stage in matching outfits, Italia McMillan and Mahmoud Bazar copped top prize for their well fitted and designed apparel.
Each contestant was asked to dress as one of their favourite Cartoon Characters, although there were some dressed as the same characters, the others were definitely a sight to see.
A fairy tale story came to life, when Miya Marcano and Jermaine Arthur Jr. came to stage. Literally stepping out of a story book, dressed as Beauty and The Beast, the crowd was impressed which resulted in cheers and laughter through the entire hall. The couple also won best smile and most photogenic.
Beauty and the Beast were determined by the judges to be the Best Cartoon Characters.
The segment that could make and break any contestant in any pageant was the talent. From a night, of singing and dancing, reciting monologues and dramatization pieces, Authorton and Hopkins performance stood out.
In a piece depicting freedom, where they portrayed a conversation between Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, they spoke about dreams and their dreams coming true, they were judged the best talent of the night.
The intensity in the room coming from parents and family members was evident, as they all seemed to be wondering if their kid was going to place, but sadly there were only four spots.
In conclusion, the pairs graced the stage in evening wear which comprised of many designs, colors and fits, the dresses were amazing.
In a spinning carriage, McMillan and Bazar, took everybody’s attention, it was a sight to see. Such beauty, such poise and such eloquence, the couple and their white and gold ensemble won Best Evening Wear.
As the saying in pageant world goes, ‘The judges decisions are final’, the night concluded with 1st runner up being Italia McMillan and Mahmoud Bazar, 2nd runner up Miya Marcano and Jermaine Arthur Jr, and 3rd runner up being Kyle Leader and Kiara Woodley.
The show which is spearheaded by Chairperson Hon. Alvera Maduro-Caines also saw presentation from other contestants for upcoming 2012 shows.
According to Hon. Maduro-Caines, in an interview prior to the show, this year's was deemed the biggest and she had expected it to be a “fight to the finish and I would not want to be the judge” since, she said the kids were all really good.
Mrs. Maduro-Caines, who is also the 6th District Representative, said competition was expected to be tight.
The chairperson had revealed that a new segment was introduced this year, “Cartoon Character Wear”, which had seem to be a favourite to the kids this year.
That segment replaced the Back In Time/ Futuristic Wear Segment. Segments for the show are Introduction, Cartoon Character Wear, Cultural Wear, Talent, Evening Wear, with Talent and Introduction carrying the most points.
The show was held under the theme, "A Golden Story to tell, enjoying festival 2012."
