LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI- Just like first and accurately reported by our news centre over the weekend, it is now confirmed that former representative for the Seventh District Dr Kedrick D. Pickering, who was defeated in the 2019 general election, is back.

It remains unclear his party affiliation as he had left the party he helped founded in 1998, the National Democratic Party (NDP), to run as an independent in 2019.

Dr Pickering, who will be 64 on April 8, 2022, will be launching at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at the Stickett in Long Look, on the eastern side of Tortola, according to a poster released by the candidate.

In the 2019 general election, Dr Pickering with 20 years in office (1999-2019), was defeated by the Virgin Islands Party’s Dr The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), the current Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture.

It is expected that there will be about four persons in the 2023 race for the Seventh District seat, along with Dr Pickering and Dr Wheatley. According to sources in the NDP, former banker Kevon S. Lettsome is expected to be their candidate for D7. In addition, residents in the Seventh District have told our news centre that the Water and Sewerage Director Mrs Perline R. Scatliffe-Leonard is considering a run in D7.

In the 2019 election in a three-person race, Dr Wheatley received 384 votes to Dr Pickering’s 338. The NDP candidate Hipolito D. Penn received 136.

This brings to five the number of candidates declared for the Virgin Islands’ General Election constitutionally due by the second quarter of 2023.

The others are Lesmore Smith and Shaina M. Smith-Archer of Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM); Bevin S. George, who has not stated his party affiliation; and Independent Candidate Rosemary Cindy Rosan.

Dr Pickering reportedly contesting D7 seat in 2023 Elections

Former National Democratic Party (NDP) Candidate and Deputy Premier, Dr Kedrick D. Pickering who was defeated in the 2019 General Elections as an Independent Candidate is expected to announce in the new week, his candidacy for the Seventh District in the 2023 General Elections in the Virgin Islands.

Dr Pickering was defeated in 2019 by the current Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture Dr The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

After 20 years, what does he wants?

It is unclear if Dr Picketing who has spent 20 years in office (1999-2019), will return to the NDP or contest as an Independent Candidate, or will join another political party.

Dr Pickering on the November 19, 2019, edition of the Honestly Speaking show had also told moderator Claude O. Skelton-Cline, that he does not miss the politics of the Virgin Islands.

Many critics have said that after 20 years,  he has little to show and should leave the political space for new blood.

His supporters claim that he can represent the Territory anywhere and will be poised for a Ministry if his side wins.

More accessible out of office

Since his loss, many have said Dr Pickering became accessible, but while in office he “rode high above the clouds” and no one had access to him especially, the people from district 7, except the elite class who lived on the sister islands and cays.

Dr Pickering who will be 64 on April 8, 2022, is one of the founding members of the main opposition NDP.

At a political campaign leading up to 2015 General Elections, Dr Pickering said the people of the Virgin Islands are jealous of him because he “has rich white friends.”

Help!, Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help!
Mon. Tues Wes. Thu. Fri. Sat. Sun.

Welcome back Dr. Kendrick Pickering. We are in great need of help in our country. Our country at this time are in great disarray. The current administration is ineptly incompetent. Many of the bloggers are trying to sow doubts in your mind. They are not rats, but they are as scared as rats at the very announcement that you again contest District 7 seat as out political leader. That know that Hon. Dr. Natalio Sajande Wheatley emensely lacks what is necessary needed to represent this country, and especially District 7. This is the main reason why they are trying to discourage you.
But like Micheal Jordan, and other great shooters know that you can't score a basketball point until you first shoot the ball toward the rim. Neither can one get a hit with the bat remaing on their shoulder our cocked in the air pointing skyward. So run you must, win you will, next coming general election, God, and the voters your propellng strength.

What help help help help help help? In all of the years, he was in office, our community still looks like a SHIT HOLE! He built a small children's park where the adult bums hang out, the Sticket looks like a slum motel. Show me any upgrades that made Long Look look any better. The garbage bin across from his house looks like a rat-infested lounge. He wants back in to grab more money from his rich white friends' and sell us out once again. What a slap in our faces for him to have the gall to run again wasting our time.....AGAIN!

A simple definition of politics (Wikipedia): “Politics is the way that people living in groups make decisions. Politics is about making agreements between people so that they can live together in groups such as tribes, cities, or countries.” Politics is a blood sport that is not for choir boys and can become addicting. The power, status, influence and opportunity is the opiate of the politician. Most politician experiencing and enjoying the power, status, influence and opportunity struggles to give up politics. It is akin to gamblers ruin. Some don’t know when their ship has sailed, when the jib is up, when people are not into them and when to exit gracefully stage left, risking being kicked to the curb. Some let power go their heads, forget their roots and where they came from, become arrogant and big of themselves and feel they are better than constituents, except the big shots.

The bottom line is in any job one has to deliver positive outcomes, contribute to the bottomline, etc, and if not one is shown to the door. After 5 terms in office, does the former legislator have a rock solid resume? Claiming that one cannot be worst than the incumbent is a non/starter. Any politician candidate must clearly state what is his/her plan of action, how it will paid for and when will it get it done. Politicians have a habit of overpromising and underdelivering and voters with their short/self-serving memory let them get away with it. Political patronage, freebs, and dependency have ruined BVI politics. Voters are bought with trinkets; we are worth more than trinkets.

Moreover, sometime time in the political wilderness can rejuvenate one into finding a new course(s), new workable and practical plans, new attitude, new found humility and civility (perhaps), etc. Lest not forget that all politicians are chameleons, some are con artists, etc, so let’s wake up from our slumber and be vigilant, smart. The horses are off to the races, for it is talking season, silly season. Listen, evaluate and decide, for the BVI is at critical juncture.

I will never vote for an independent candidate. Never...Could be my friend, my brother, my Sister, my Doctor, my Lawyer... This country needs politicians and leaders that are people's person, that can get along with people, that wants to get along with people, who will listen and respect the views of others, who can sit at a table and reason out differences, find solutions to issues, who believes in unity and the power of people. Not God onto themselves...Being an independent candidate to me is a cap-out, its saying u can do it alone, you dont need anyone. ..It has to be ur way...I believe in the disciples approach people sitting at a table..of course you will always have that Judas, but been able to be led and to follow lawful instructions, be good at the role given to you is the start of been a good leader..

How many times y'all going go back and forth putting in and taking out the same parties as if something fundamental will change?? SMH.. It is possible to fall from the sky, but not from the earth.
    .
When one is up, he or she can fall. But if they they are willing to rise again, with God's help, and the voters wisdom redemption will be assured.

One may fail once, twice and more, but only when they quit trying to rise, they are a failure.

Faith wins oer everytime. Why? Because faith without works is failer.

Even the mightiest if man can fall while he is living, only when he or she has lost their will, and strength to rise, they remain down.

    Opposition enhance victory.

The ocean waves can smudder a pieces of cork in it's violent furry, but as soon as the wind calm, the cork will rise again.

You would be voting to live in sewage, poverty and oppression for sure! There is a spiritual evil over that district that you can feel each time you drive through that community. The people can't see or fix the mess they are living in. There are many 'highly' intelligent people in that district who are also very unwise, and have dazed and blurred reasoning. They are in mental and spiritual bondage and it is obvious to everyone else but them. It's like.... something is in their water supply.

There are serious questions that need to be answered such as why the NDP Administration gave the gentleman at Oil Nut Bay seabed rights when he was granted approval by the said NDP Administration to construct the dock in the area of YCCS in VG. YCCS was destroyed by Irma and I am sure they would have liked to reopen but cant because the gentleman from Oil Nut Bay wouldn't allow them to use his dock at a reasonable price. Talk about greed! They more money they have, the more they want. YCCS employed locals but those jobs are gone and likely will be forever all because the then Administration gave the ONB gentleman sea bed rights in the are of YCCS.
