UPDATE: It is Governor Kenneth E. Mapp!
As the election results poured in last night with the only race to decide who will replace out-going Governor John P. de Jongh Jr., who is term-limited and cannot run for re-election after two consecutive 4 year terms in office, it became clear within one hour of the counting that it was a blow-out by the Mapp-Potter Independent team over the Democratic pair of Donna M. Christensen and Basil C. Ottley.
Unlike on November 4, 2014 there were no stormy weather conditions to deal with this time around and few glitches at the polls and voter turnout up on St. Croix a strong-hold for the Mapp-Potter team.
Governor-Elect Kenneth E. Mapp will be sworn in on Monday January 5, 2015 becoming the American Territory’s 8th elected governor.
According to this news site’s Team of Reports in the USVI there are at most 2,000 to 3,000 absentee ballots still to be counted, but they are not enough to change the results of the election.
The St. Thomas-St. John Board of Elections will begin its absentee ballot count Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 4 p.m.
According to Elections Supervisor Caroline F. Fawkes, she told the St. Thomas Source news paper that “there were about 200 mail-in, 30 emailed and approximately 300 walk-in votes to be tallied on St. Croix, probably on Wednesday”.
Here are the results:
GOVERNOR & LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
(VOTE FOR) 1
Kenneth E. Mapp (IND) . . . . . . 15,268 63.89 %
Donna M. Christensen (DEM). . . . . 8,573 35.87 %
WRITE-IN (IND). . . . . . . . . 58 .24 %
The election won’t be certified for 10 days – the deadline for absentee ballots, but it’s clear Mr. Mapp will be Governor and Potter his Lieutenant Governor.
