UPDATE: Home & vehicle destroyed by fire @ Copper Mine

COPPER MINE, Virgin Gorda, VI- The fire at Copper Mine on Virgin Gorda last night, January 18, 2022, destroyed a home and all its contents, along with a vehicle.

The blaze; however, was prevented from spreading to nearby properties, thanks to a concerted effort from firefighters, VISAR, police and public-spirited citizens.

There have been no reports of injuries or loss of life.

All-out effort

According to Chief Fire Officer Zebalon A. McLean, Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service Officers received the first call of the fire at Princess Quarters, adjacent to the Copper Mine Road, around 8:20 pm and by 8:34 pm fire officers began attempting to contain the blaze.

McLean said supplementary water supply from trucks was also used and by 10:00 pm, the fire was 75% extinguished and damping down had begun.

The fire was completely extinguished at 12:09 am.

Mr McLean commended the efforts of all involved in containing and extinguishing the fire, including full-time Fire Officers, Auxiliary Fire Officers, Airport Fire officers, VISAR personnel and VG Police, along with “a plethora of the VG public on scene assisting.”

The Fire Chief noted that water trucks from Dwight Flax and Ricardo Flax as well as 1 backhoe from Public Works Department were also used.

Damages

Mr McLean said he could not comment on the possible cause of the fire but said there was a total loss to structure and all that it contained, including a parked car inside.

Ninth District Representative Hon Vincent O. Wheatley also expressed gratitude to all involved in containing and extinguishing the fire.

‘VG Strong’

“I really want to commend the Virgin Gorda Community for rallying together tonight like only we can in a time of crisis and bring it to submission. This is who we are, VG Strong,” Hon Wheatley commented on his Facebook page.

VG residents put on high alert as fire in Copper Mine area rages

Residents in the Copper Mine area of Virgin Gorda have been put on high alert, as a fire in the area could spread to other dwelling places.

According to reports reaching our newsroom, the fire has engulfed a building.

"If you are in that area in the surrounding houses please prepare yourself and get ready to evacuate immediately in case the fire spreads," Ninth District Representative Hon Vincent O. Wheatley stated on VIP Radio this evening, January 18, 2022.

Persons have also been asked to keep away from the area.

"I am asking all persons to please stay away unless you are there to help fight the fire please stay away. Stay off the coppermine road at this point in time," Hon Wheatley cautioned.

    very thankful to hear there was no loss of life! it is sad that everything was lost, memories etc gone with it. but material can be replaced. i send my prayers for the owners/renters in this time. lord knows its not easy out here to add something like this...stay strong!
