ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Guy Malone, who was replaced as President by Byron J. Hodge four years ago, has promised that the new executive will be more transparent and will be attentive to the needs of the Basketball Family, including Coaches, Players, Supporters and Sponsors as he looks to put the Sport back on an even keel.

“One of the things that I have as a trademark is being a person of discipline, so one of the things I want to do is put the love of the game back at the forefront. I want to understand the youths, see what the problems are and work with them to stop them going astray,” said Malone, following his election to the helm of the BVI Basketball Federation last evening January 24, 2014.

Malone has been away from the frontline for a while, but has, after some serious thought, listened to public opinion and came back to the sport.

“Everywhere I went someone would tell me I needed to come back, but as I said to the new executive, it can’t just be about me, we need to give respect to earn respect and work together.”

As far as planning for the new season and what he intends to focus on, Malone was forthright that discipline and the regulations need to be re asserted as the basic principles.

“The Executive will meet to set the agenda,” he said, “but when I left we had a Constitution and we were supposed to establish by- laws. There currently aren’t any by-laws so that will be at the forefront before the league starts. We also have to get all the other basketball leagues to buy into an overall programme so there is no overlap.”

I am glad to see that the BB now has a federation that consists of more than just one selfish individual. Mr Hogde was not a good leader and as a result the competition level of the game dropped and the spectatorship as well. To the new Federation, congrats. Mr Guy Malone, it was under your leadership that the territory hosted the 2009 CBC championship which was a resounding success. Now that you have returned I hope that you will seek to put the game of basketball back to its former glory and even surpass it.

Mr Hodge was not the problem. The problem is adults acting like children and misguiding children especially those working at the high school for their personal egos. Their egos have hindered basketball and possibly set the sport back for more than Mr Hodge.

The entire direction of the sport needs to be run by one body and all involved need to be on same page. But being that everyone here have such massive ego, and crabs in a barrel seems to come to mind.

Change has to come at the street level and work its way up. Blaming Mr Hodge is a cop out for development overall is suffering because of jealousy and envy.

Basketball didn't suffer because of Mr Hodge. It suffers because adults who act like children are guiding our youth at the high school and in the youth leagues. They are hindering the development of the sport and the youths for their own personal egos.

First thing is, everyone need to be on same page in the districts and above. As far as I know Coaches Steve and Mike are only ones who are willing to work for the benefit of the children and not their egos. And perhaps this new administration can be at the forefront of this revelation of togetherness. That's a word all our sports here need to embrace. In fact all people here need to embrace. We have slowly and methodically turned into crabs in a barrel.

It takes a village remember and a village aint one or two adults.

So what is the plan going forward? Get back in good standing with FIBA & Olympic Committees so we have a real recognized federation? Begin real training programs for our so called "coaches?" Informing the players interested in going off island who are the reputible people to listen to and who are the oportunist? Tell me, what is the plan?

Welcome guy and the old crew who had bring the game to its pinnacle in 2009. Now lets carry on where u left off which was no fault of your own. Time to properly promote the game as it should be. We want the BVI at Olympics in the next 3yrs and a decent women's team. Guy n the Crew can do it again.

Mr. Maloon, we not only want transparency for B. ball, we want transparency for the frequency spectrum which they are pushing you to give away to the local company. We are waiting and watching to see how this will play out.

Transparency! That's the 2014 buzz word. Everybody saying it, but none of them are.
