UPDATE: FB poster was referring to VG library
Despite our efforts we were unable to make contact with the Facebook user until after the publication of our article, during which we spoke with Librarian Suzanne S. Greenaway.
During our interview with Ms Greenaway, she said that there were no such issues being faced by the library in Road Town.
She denied that students are being made to pay for internet services and that there is no ink for the printing of documents as alleged by the Facebook poster who also alleged that the budget for the library has been cut and that as a consequence the air conditioning in the building will “never be fixed.”
The post purportedly made by the Facebook user said, “Libraries are one source of knowledge, and libraries are needed in a community. With the only library in this community, much is needed to keep it going. A cut budget; that means the ac will never be fixed, but the old one will remain on the wall to build mold and dust another way to breed sickness. Students go to do their research, have to pay for the internet. Yet they are unable to print because of no ink. Is this what this little nation library services come to?”
However, the Facebook poster made contact with this news site to clarify that she was referring to the library in Virgin Gorda.
When we contacted that library, someone who gave her name only as Ms Baptiste said she would not comment on the issues raised.

‘Students don’t pay for internet’ – Librarian Suzanne S. Greenaway
-Facebook user makes a slew of allegations against library, including that its budget has been cut & that students had to pay for internet
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Librarian at the Virgin Islands Public Library Suzanne S. Greenaway has denied that students are being made to pay for internet services and that there is no ink for the printing of documents.
She was responding to a post made on Facebook by a user who alleged that the budget for the library has been cut and that as a consequence the air conditioning in the building will “never be fixed.”
The post also alleged that students going to do research had to pay for internet services and they were unable to print their documents because of no ink.

However, this news site visited the Virgin Islands Public Library today April 28, 2015 and spoke to Greenaway with a view to bringing the Facebook post to her attention.
“I am not aware of this Facebook post so I am not in a position to comment,” she said when this news site spoke with her. She would not comment on the rest of the post regarding the alleged cutting of the budget and its effect on the air conditioning system.
However, following her reading of the post for herself, Greenaway said, “Internet services are free for students. Students also get a reduced rate for printing.”
Asked whether the allegation was true that the library was out of ink, she said, “We do have ink.”
This news site made attempts to reach Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture Dr Macia Potter but up to post time was unsuccessful in doing so.
More library hours needed
Only recently, talk show host Douglas Wheatley, Speaking on his radio programme, the 3D Show on ZBVI 780AM on April 24, 2015, suggested there should be more library hours on Saturdays as he said the libraries are often closed by midday even though the closing time is 1pm.
He also suggested extended hours on weekdays so more of the working public, especially those that get off work around 5:00pm and later, would be able to access the services of the department.
"By the time they get to the library the library closes at 7 o clock," Mr Wheatley said.
