UPDATE: FB poster was referring to VG library

- staff @ VG library would not comment on allegations made
Following our publication of an article which detailed allegations by a Facebook user regarding use of internet facilities and printing of research material, it has been made clear to this news site that the person was making reference to the Public Library in Virgin Gorda and not Road Town. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Following our publication of an article which detailed allegations by a Facebook user regarding use of internet facilities and printing of research material, it has been made clear to this news site that the person was making reference to the public library in Virgin Gorda and not Road Town.

Despite our efforts we were unable to make contact with the Facebook user until after the publication of our article, during which we spoke with Librarian Suzanne S. Greenaway.

During our interview with Ms Greenaway, she said that there were no such issues being faced by the library in Road Town.

She denied that students are being made to pay for internet services and that there is no ink for the printing of documents as alleged by the Facebook poster who also alleged that the budget for the library has been cut and that as a consequence the air conditioning in the building will “never be fixed.”

The post purportedly made by the Facebook user said, “Libraries are one source of knowledge, and libraries are needed in a community. With the only library in this community, much is needed to keep it going. A cut budget; that means the ac will never be fixed, but the old one will remain on the wall to build mold and dust another way to breed sickness. Students go to do their research, have to pay for the internet. Yet they are unable to print because of no ink. Is this what this little nation library services come to?”

However, the Facebook poster made contact with this news site to clarify that she was referring to the library in Virgin Gorda.

When we contacted that library, someone who gave her name only as Ms Baptiste said she would not comment on the issues raised.

‘Students don’t pay for internet’ – Librarian Suzanne S. Greenaway

-Facebook user makes a slew of allegations against library, including that its budget has been cut & that students had to pay for internet

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Librarian at the Virgin Islands Public Library Suzanne S. Greenaway has denied that students are being made to pay for internet services and that there is no ink for the printing of documents.

She was responding to a post made on Facebook by a user who alleged that the budget for the library has been cut and that as a consequence the air conditioning in the building will “never be fixed.”

The post also alleged that students going to do research had to pay for internet services and they were unable to print their documents because of no ink.

However, this news site visited the Virgin Islands Public Library today April 28, 2015 and spoke to Greenaway with a view to bringing the Facebook post to her attention.

“I am not aware of this Facebook post so I am not in a position to comment,” she said when this news site spoke with her. She would not comment on the rest of the post regarding the alleged cutting of the budget and its effect on the air conditioning system.

However, following her reading of the post for herself, Greenaway said, “Internet services are free for students. Students also get a reduced rate for printing.”

Asked whether the allegation was true that the library was out of ink, she said, “We do have ink.”

This news site made attempts to reach Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture Dr Macia Potter but up to post time was unsuccessful in doing so.

More library hours needed

Only recently, talk show host Douglas Wheatley, Speaking on his radio programme, the 3D Show on ZBVI 780AM on April 24, 2015, suggested there should be more library hours on Saturdays as he said the libraries are often closed by midday even though the closing time is 1pm.

He also suggested extended hours on weekdays so more of the working public, especially those that get off work around 5:00pm and later, would be able to access the services of the department.

"By the time they get to the library the library closes at 7 o clock," Mr Wheatley said.

That is a shame. If we really want to improve literacy Gov't needs to invest in basic things like the library.

The library serves each and everyone of us even visitors from afar and with a thinking and caring mind what will it take us for the upkeep of such? Must we always wait for govt to do everything? It is about time for promotional and overseas examinations what as civil minded citizens if we come together and donate paper, ink, books (especially those that can be of assistance to our students at this time),etc to assist. The child you might help might just be your own or you yourself.Let reach out where we can.God bless

The library is often out of ink. Based on budget estimates, libraries and schools will face even stiffer financial challenges. MWV claims that he is building a culture of excellence but I have to wonder. At the rate that he is going, many schools will soon have to close as a result of lack of funding if things get any worse. Trust me when I say that supplies have been reduced to a critical point. Things are not easy under MWV's portfolio. He boasted of saving millions but he did not tell the public what he cut in order to do so. Talk is cheap. Education is not a priority.

What needs to be mentioned is the infrastructural deterioration of BFEC due to MEC's failure to fund school maintenance but they boasting of cruise pier expansion. This NDP Administration needs to prioritize.

We need to thank God for what we have so He could supply more. We complain too much to the extent that the little that we have is taken away from us. May God bless and continue to provide for us.

schools have no ink, no paper, no markers to write on the board and the list goes on but yet teachers are expected to be effective using their personal monies to buy supplies. Talk that!
