CAPPOONS BAY, Tortola, VI- Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) can now confirm that the young man who was shot to death in Cappoons Bay today, January 30, 2022, is local Jaquan Thomas.

Mr Thomas was reportedly fatally shot just after 11:00 am.

It is unclear whether anyone has yet been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting, which is the first homicide in the territory for 2022.

Information just reaching our newsroom is that there has been a fatal shooting incident at Cappoons Bay on Tortola today, January 30, 2022.

According to reports, the shooting incident took place shortly after 11:00am.

One person was reportedly met unresponsive by police following the shooting.

Police have confirmed the fatal shooting but said "Details surrounding the incident are unclear at this point so no further information can be released at this time."

It is the first apparent homicide for 2022 in the Virgin Islands.

    We need change. No one should feel confident in carrying out these acts and getting away with it.

    Look at how the police would raid Cappons bay with their machine guys out. Look how they walk through Christmas in the city with machine guns. Board tourist charters to check for papers with machine guns.

    Where is all this protection when it’s really needed. Where are the armed units stationed. Cappons bay is a popular tourist attraction.

    Raiding communities for a little weed and showing police force for 20 mins is obviously not the security solution we require. I think we need strategic positioning of permanent mobile units. There are limited routes to cover. We need deterrence to the point where you choose to play assassin you get locked up or taken out by the force.

    When some one starts drowning on the beach the lifeguards are there. not a call away. They are there.

    Showing off big police guns ain’t it either if they’re not there when they’re needed.

    This is just me speaking on my behalf only, this 2x4 Island is to small for the volume of gun violence against each other that is going on, perhaps capital punishment should be reinstated again. People is getting gun down in their homes, the streets, in front of their relatives, riding in cars, in bars/clubs and this is something to think about.The way things is going with the gun violence in this place, you don’t know what to expect, don’t be surprise if the brazen gunmen don’t walk in a church or a supermarket and gun someone down.     Something is definitely wrong here in the BVI. I will like to see the statistics of the murders that have been committed here in the BVI, those solved and those unsolved. I agree with I don't know why. These young men are involved in 'shady' dealings, hereby causing their untimely deaths. What has gone wrong? The home is the first place to look. Some young men grow up with both parents and some grow up with the mother alone. Some mothers can't get these young boys handle when they grow up because they would not correct them from the outset. They allow the seed to germinate and hence the end result(I am not saying this is so in this case because I don't know them) Look to Jesus, he is the only hope.

      We need to bring back capital punishment. I believe that in America it is said that lethal injection is expensive and some times it does not work well. They sometimes use death by firing squad, that can be implemented here. Things will only get worst if there is no change. The prison is in shambles and overcrowded. With the frequent reports of prisoners escaping, do you think anyone will come forward and see what they saw? They will be afraid of retaliation.

    The prison is a joke and does not act as a deterrent. It’s been stated for years. The community has been displeased. Prisoners sharing pictures on social media where they are decked out in gold and wearing the latest fashions is absolutely ridiculous!!! It also lets the guys in the outside know that the gang structure is still in place.
