UPDATE: VG man pleads guilty to gun possession, wife denies charges
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Elroy Caines, 27, and his wife Kayone Caines, 28, both residents of Valley, Virgin Gorda appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on weapons charges today, March 19, 2014.
Mr Caines pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of an illegal weapon while Mrs Caines pleaded not guilty to the same offences. An additional charge of possession of ammunition was put in abeyance pending a ruling by the Supreme Court.
Prinicipal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe told the court that Officers of the Special Investigations and Tactical Response Units executed a search warrant on the couple’s home on March 18, 2014 but the search was only witnessed by Mrs Caines.
During a search of the home, an investigator observed a wooden panel in the hallway entrance to the bathroom appeared to be breached. He removed the panel and found three white plastic bags.
One bag contained an IntraTech-9 Luger submachine gun with an obliterated serial number while another contained some 183 rounds of ammunition.
Officers also found an AK-47 assault rifle with an obliterated serial number. Mrs Caines was asked by the officers what the items were and also who they belonged to but she reportedly made no reply. The items were taken into police custody.
Police informed Mrs Caines she was being arrested for the possession of illegal firearms and she was taken to the Virgin Gorda police station. Mr Caines later arrived at the police station and was informed that he would be arrested under suspicion of possession of illegal weapons and ammunition.
The couple was later transported to the Road Town Police Station where investigators conducted interviews with each of them.
Mr Caines allegedly confessed that he knew about the weapons and had placed them in hiding in a panel in the walls while his wife was away from the home. He allegedly told officers the items belonged to him.
However, Mrs Caines allegedly told the investigators she had no knowledge of the weapons or how they got there. A check of the registry for gun licenses showed that neither defendant’s name was registered.
The Crown, led by Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe told the court that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions will be pursuing charges against Mrs Caines despite Mr Caines’ confession.
Mrs Caines was placed on bail of $5000. She is required to have suitable surety, surrender all travel documents and report to the Virgin Gorda Police Station Mondays and Fridays between 6AM and 6PM.
The two will return to Court on April 4, 2014 when it is expected that mitigation and sentencing will take place for Mr Caines’ guilty plea.

To all the young men and women out there, I hope you will take note and live productive lives in this territory. After all B.V.I is a paradise.
I want to bring to your attention that once the weapons were found in the premises and the occupants were the sole occupants, then they are responsible for the weapons.
I hope Elroy will see who his friends are. It is time he keep away from them. They are a set of traitors.
