ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The British Virgin Islands Basketball Federation (BVIBF) today May 11, 2014 sent out an email reminder stating that the March Past for teams will begin promptly at 3:30 pm and that all of the participating teams are expected out.

The March Past, opening ceremony and games scheduled for yesterday Saturday May 10, 2014 had been shifted to today because of yesterday's inclement weather. All of the games scheduled for today have been postponed to a date yet to be decided.

“We haven’t determined the date for those as yet. We have to have a meeting to decide on the new date since we haven’t had a face to face meeting since yesterday’s postponement,” said Mr Liddell De Freitas, the Public Relations Officer of the British Virgin Islands Basketball Federation (BVIBF) in a comment to Virgin Islands News Online today.

Asked whether he expected a strong turnout to the March Past and games today, De Freitas said, “I haven’t gotten any response from anyone saying that they can’t make it or won’t make it. Everyone I have spoken to seems ready to go for today.”

Speaking to this news site, BVIBF President Mr Guy L. Malone said that when the federation compiled the schedule for the games they left some dates open lower down in the month. “So I guess when we do have a meeting we will look at that.”

Asked about the preparation for today’s March Past and games, he said those preparations are coming along fine. “The teams are cooperating and so far, as far as I know, we had a few entertainment pull outs but we are working hard to replace them,” he said.

“We are scheduled to start the March Past at 3:30 pm and the ceremony will begin at 4:00 pm. Everything is in place as far as I know,” said Mr Malone.

He said too that this year the federation will also have a short and sweet league and will be charging a modest entrance fee for adults, children and players; not with the aim of making money but to raise funds to promote the interest of the sport and bring people out so that the game could get the support and return to the level it once was in the Virgin Islands.

BVIBF games postponed due to bad weather

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BVI Basketball Federation (BVIBF) announced the postponement of its Opening ceremony, March past and Games which were originally scheduled for today, May 10, 2014.

The event has been rescheduled for tomorrow, May 11, 2014 at 3PM once favourable weather permits. Games originally scheduled for tomorrow will be rescheduled to another date to be announced later.

BVIBF President Mr Guy L. Malone said a decision was made based on the flash flood warning issued earlier today and the poor weather conditions that have prevailed to have the event moved forward to a more appropriate time.

Eighteen teams were expected to participate in the march pass today, including eight senior teams and ten junior teams. The event was scheduled to move off from the House of Assembly and lead to the Multi Purpose Sports Complex where a ceremony would herald the beginning of the games.

It is likely there would have been a poor turnout on account of the advisory that motorists stay off the road.
