VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI - Shea O.S. Alexander of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre has emerged the top student for the 2013 National School Leaving Examination.

When this news site caught up with the young man at a church concert at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Virgin Gorda, he said that he was still in a state of disbelief. "I still don't believe that I really topped the whole Territory. I still expecting to hear someone come and say that it was a mistake, it still hasn't settled in with me properly," said Alexander.

The young man said he had no doubt that he was going to top his class or school but topping the Territory was no place on his radar.

Alexander said his success was owed to his dedication to his work and the insistence of his parents- mom Caryl O'Neal, and the Principal of his school, physiologist and father Thomas Alexander.

His words to his peers who'll be taking the examination in 2013 were, "It’s just one year for you to give up everything else and focus your studies. It not too much, just make the sacrifice and you'll sure reap the benefits."

Shea O.S. Alexander told Virgin Islands News Online that the next step for academically is the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) where he intends to pursue studies in the business stream with a focus on tourism.

Seven ESHS students among Top 10 at NSLE

186 of 213 ESHS students successful this year

The Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) has claimed 70% of the top ten performances at the National School Leaving Examination of 2013. Results were released today, June 14, 2013.

The #1 Student is not from ESHS but the largest school in the Virgin Islands boasts the #2 Student Rhea Sprauve (ESHS Valedictorian), #3 Tejpattie Churaman (Salutatorian), #4 Gabrielle Creque, #6 Joshua Rajhunath, #7 Paul Mourillon, #9 Anson Benjamine and #10 Jon Ayo Farquharson.

186 of the 213 students who wrote the examinations this year were successful.

When this news site visited the school, it was a scene of mixed emotions among the students, teachers, some parents and the school's administration.

Acting Principal Mr Wade W. Tobin said he was very proud of the students' performance this year and more so that of the male students who did very well. Mr Tobin said that of the 186 who passed, 83 were males. "In society young men go through a lot of challenges and so I want to congratulate them for sticking to the task and coming out successful."

He was also very proud of the dedication of teachers and those parents who worked with the students.

We even caught up with the Valedictorian Rhea Sprauve and Salutatorian Tejpattie Churaman, both of whom were overwhelmed with emotion.

"To be honest I was expecting Salutatorian but I got Valedictorian and I am overwhelmed right now," said Sprauve as her friends tried to get her attention to celebrate while doing the interview.

She managed to say amidst the rush of her peers that she had dedicated her time to studying and in so doing had set priorities and kept her focus on her studies. To those taking the examination next year, she said, "Don't let me down, you can do it, just stay focussed." Sprauve said her next move is to attend the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) to pursue studies in Business Administration.

Salutatorian Tejpattie Churaman, on the other hand, said she was aiming for Valedictorian but is still thankful that she satisfied one of her desires and that was not to fall below the top ten for the Territory. "I am so thankful to all those who helped me and I am happy to do them and myself proud," said Churaman.

While we celebrate how many students passed let us remember how we contributed to the failure of more than thirty students. Thirty student who will enter society without that coveted piece of paper to move them somewhere positive in society. While we may say that they should be more serious and responsible we too should be more serious and responsible. Causes for the failure: We ended the afterschool tutorial that was offered to last year's students which enable many not to need supplementary; the change the date of marking school leaving exams which prevented the result of the test to be available to determine which students needed supplementary; Supplementary at the school was unorganized, with many students not knowing what to do and where to go. What did we do we give drowning students bars of gold and call it help. The failure of one child is an indictment against our school and thirty is treason. We are too shortsighted. We do not understand that male students who fail to meet the minimum requirements for school leaving often meet the minimum requirement for criminal activities and female meet the requirement for sexual abuse. These affect the social fabric of our community. They fill our jails or feed on our welfare system continue the vicious cycle generation after generation. Only visionaries who understands the importance of education to a community work hard to avoid this. Change must come to the Ministry. The CEO and company MUST GO.

"work it".....just because it don't have no jobs for "you" doesn't mean that there isn't any for the students. Yes there is college, and there are jobs after college, when they decide to work hard for them and not look for hand outs; .... I speak it on their behalf. As for you .... continue to speak poison for yourself, and your words (as well as depending on the government) will get you no where.
Congratulations ESHS Class of 2013! Remember, avoid negative people and negative words such as "work it's" comment, for your are not poor.......your are more than conquerors!!

We need to encourage them to take up the evening classes, enrolled in some skill program. It is the Ministry job also to put into place, (if they don't already have) a program to let the children have their diploma. I don't see why children should be failing high school. In Primary school you can hear the phrase " all passed their exams to high school" why we cannot have one year where all our high school children pass and go on to colleges. The Ministry need to look at this and start working to prove it can happen, dedication from parents, teachers and peers need to be in the fore front. The ministry must support our young people. It is time we see all our young boys and girls pass their exams.

Could we please not turn this year graduation into the fiasco it was last year. Please aim for the ceremony to be one hour and ABSOLUTELY NO MORE than two hours. There is no need for all those speakers and presentations. Lets get it right this year AND MAKE GRADUATION ENJOYABLE FOR ALL!
