ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The August Monday Parade for the 70th Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival on August 5, 2024, got off to a very late start but that did not stop the revelry that went into the evening on the streets of the capital city, Road Town.

The parade, which was led by Marshall and former legislator Alvera Maduro-Caines, was full of royalty with the many queens in the Virgin Islands as well as the US Virgin Islands gracing the parade with their smiles and waves.

Among those in the parade was Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade Hon Lorna G. Smith (AL) OBE, who donned festival costume to participate with Treasures troupe.

Hon Smith looked fit as a fiddle and would have been the envy of the not so young as she danced through the streets of Road Town.

Where are they. 330 pm still at customs building waiting. Joke. Next year I am not leaving my house, or maybe go to St. Kitts / Nevis.

It was a hot mess. So long between entries. Such a disappointment for the 70th

The idea of a night parade doesn’t seems so bad since they do that in other Caribbean countries. The only fix is more lights. This would people more time to rest off after juvay and start the parade at 4 or 5 instead of 1pm, troupes won’t in the hot sun all day. It was a really nice vibe watching treasures during the night
    • @ Night Parade. Ur wrong. (07/08/2024, 14:29) Like (4) Dislike (2) Reply
Other caribbean countries Parade start at 9am 10am the latest but because they so many bands and troupes and the long long 6-7 miles route it end up at early night. Never late night or dark night..The BVi barely have bands and troupes and its a 2 -3 miles route, no reason why it should go into night. Then they have people from St. Thomas have to get their last Boat for 6. They missing part of it. Its every yr the same thing. ..

Soca bands “Sex” Reggae/ Dancehall acts “Sex” up and down Road Town August Monday “ Sex” Sex sex sex no real morals or message was given except Sex Sex Sex - even the Government made mention about wrapping it up “ good message “ yet everything just Sex oriented. The festival just one big long Orgy party.

Keep playing on words and fooling yourself. It has now evolved into a carnival, and I am afraid that there is no turning back.

Does that make it right? We have to follow like sheep ?
A price will be paid for all that sex sex sex. When the Philipinos joined our festival for our 60th Tola cried out that they taking over and they were clean and very very beautiful and fully covered. We need to take an example from them. We chased them out of our parade cause we felt ashamed instead of learning.

The Rise ans Shine Tramp needs to be on Sunday morning instead of Monday morning. This would give persons a chance to sleep all day Sunday and have no excuse for waking up on time for the parade.

If we’d only REPENT! This is NOT our heritage! Our father is in raged for how we behave as if he do not see all the gyrating, lewdness and sinful behavior that is going on! REPENT, I say. Judgment is here!

I need the city manager name !! I come to the bvi every year with my family & I was charged $50 bucks from a police officer for having a tent up
  • Really (07/08/2024, 14:38) Like (2) Dislike (5) Reply
@Hmmm so you think it's okay for you to come here every year and put up a tent for free while the people here have to pay to put up a tent every year? You need to think before you talk. You said a tent not an umbrella so you definitely have the right to get charged in fact you should get charged double for just commenting

From time you people get settled after emigrating you want to call shots. The RISE AND SHINE TRAMP and parade on same day is just fine and right in line with OUR BVI TRADITION.

In Trinidad y’all jump up straight for a week and here complaining bout a few hours.

All we need are rules and enforcement. That goes for immigration and festival and everything in between.

People know they are serious about starting time and so they straggle down after radio say parade start. It been that way for donkey years.

Now instead of worrying about start time you people should worry about QUALITY. If they put back the first judging station closer to government house, set and stick to a start time, take off points for incomplete troops at the first judges, allow no jumping in along the parade route, increase the prize money, you will see how quick the broken system will be fix.

As an incomer I don’t agree with all the complaints. Having never seen anything like this before I thought the whole day was absolutely brilliant. Yes Jouvert was long, yes the parade was long. It’s the 70th year so why not accept it for what it was and show some respect. Personally I thought it was nice to mix with all the locals during both events and watch them enjoying themselves. Respect is a two way street. I would 100% come back next year if I could relive that day again. Well done to everyone involved in both events. My only one suggestion is, there could be more daytime events for local kids who are on their summer holidays. Merely an observation
