UPDATE: 41 candidates to contest 2019 Elections, VIP only party with full 13
There are 13 seats up for grabs in the one chamber, VI House of Assembly (HoA) and only one group, the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) has a full slate of 13 candidates.
Of the 41 candidates nominated today, all are eligible to run for office, 16 are contesting for a Territorial At-Large seat, while there is a total of 25 District Candidates.
The National Democratic Party (NDP 1) only has 11 candidates, and the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) aka ‘NDP 2’ has a mere 9 and meanwhile Progressives United (PU) only has 6, and in addition, there are 2 independent candidates.

Today February 14, 2019, is Nomination Day!
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Today, Thursday, February 14, 2019, is not only Valentine’s Day but is the day when all political aspirants and incumbents will be nominated to contest the February 25, 2019, General Election in the British Overseas Territory of the Virgin Islands (VI).
Political parties and independent candidates have mobilized their various teams to be nominated, at their designated locations around the VI.
United Kingdom appointed Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert, issued the Writs of Election on January 31, 2019, which are formal instructions issued in accordance with the Elections Act.
It’s the law
According to the writs, the Governor appointed Monday, February 25, 2019, as Polling Day and Thursday, February 14, 2019, as Nomination Day.
Supervisor of Elections, Ms Juliette Penn, previously stated that “the additional time is being provided to allow sufficient time for candidates to make declarations in accordance with section 66 of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order if deemed necessary.”
In accordance with section 26 of the Elections Act, on Nomination Day, candidates will be required to complete Form No. 15 which will be provided by the Returning Officer.
$1000.00 each candidate
Additionally, the nomination paper has to be attested by one witness.
“The candidates are also required to swear an affidavit in Form No. 16 which will also be provided by the Returning Officer, stating that to the best of their knowledge they are not disqualified under the provisions of the Constitution from contesting and being elected as a member of the House of Assembly,” according to Ms Penn.
Each candidate whether they are running in a district or independent will be required to pay $1000.00 in cash only. Opening hours for today’s nomination are 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
