FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI - Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) says in the Virgins Islands (VI), a large number of teachers are resigning over the low salaries even though they are qualified.

Speaking as a telephone guest on the International Morning Braff show on Tola Radio VI this morning, February 10, 2023, Hon de Castro said the low salaries continue to be a major issue.

“The highest qualified teacher in the Virgin Islands is being paid $34k per year… we have to have a serious discussion the current scheme.”

Hon de Castro said even when teachers upgrade their qualifications with master’s degrees, the salary scale remains low.

“It has become extremely difficult worldwide for us to get teachers in classrooms, currently we do not have teachers and we are currently approaching the mid-term of the second term in the school year,” he said.

Cost of living skyrocketed - Teachers

VI teachers in a recent letter dated January 20, had complained that the cost of living has skyrocketed, yet salaries have not risen to match inflation. This according to the Minister is preventing the recruitment of new teachers as well as the retainment of current teachers in the system.

Hon de Castro added, “Currently we are received an unprecedented amount of resignations from teachers last year, and even now into February... we have received a significant number of resignations,” she added.

She said with the current salary conditions, regional teachers are also refusing to take up local jobs in the VI where salaries in neighboring countries including the USVI are higher with starting salaries to reach $50K from September 2023.

What good is being a qualified Teacher when you can't afford to teach and still pay your bills? When parents send their children to school, the teachers are also babysitters, take verbal abuse from students, mediators between students fighting, and not being appreciated by the parents or the government. The teachers are exhausted by the time they reach home. That is why so many have taken other jobs that pay more and they can work in a not-so-stressful environment. Children are our future and they need to be shown the way so they later can be leaders too.

Teaching is a very noble profession. As a former teacher myself I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with my students and facilitating their learning. However it is one profession that you cannot survive in in the real world financially in the Caribbean. The pay is much too low. Govt after govt remark on this issue but does nothing to change it. My advice to teachers is simple. Get out while you can before you live to regret it.

May God our and physically unseen Father rescrue us from the greedy Spirit of material lust. Amen.

Hon. Minister, Sharie B. de Castro, I do share your concerns in reference to the number of teachers that have resigned, because of low salary. However, I also share in the pain of not being able to adiquately serviced due to rising cost of basics needs on a daily basis.
In the past you have promised them positive response on the topic matter, but while they did felt pacified by your promise, prices for basic needs, particular food, continue rising, daily. You now promise to discussion, because some of them resigned. But you should know that underfed teachers cannot eat discussion, cannot wear discussion, cannot pay the mortgage and rent with discussion. Can I make it simple for you, and those that think like you to understand? Ok, I will. They, (low paid teachers) need their salary raise to an acceptable level so that they will be able to cope with the high rising prices for basic needs due to inflation. You may say that we have a money shortage. I agreed. But would you agree it is so because our politicians have paid themselves heftily, and also waisted too much of our finances on unnecessary selfish ambition? Yes, you have, in my opinion.

On your concerns, allowed me to tell you the best way to solve this problem. The way to quickly solved this problem is for the Unity Government, and Minister of finances lead by our Premier Hon. Natalio Sawande Wheatley, is to approve swiftly a reasonable salary raise for the educators of our children present and future wellbeing.

You are very ignorant. Do you know 90% or more of teachers use the summer to plan? If not all! We get summers, Easter and Christmas off to rest and recover but have to take up two and three more jobs because we are struggling financially. We have our own kids too and it saddens me to say we are too tired to deal with them when we get home. So before you make statements like this do your research. Not cool. We spend more of our monies on school supplies and feeding students. You sound like someone who does not have children and do not understand the dynamis of the school environment and culture. Your comment breaks my heart! As a teacher most of us put our all into our job. We deserve a pay raise and our increments that we worked hard for. When you work from 9 to 5 we do not have that luxury. We work 24 -7 and 365 days a year so do your research before you speak on subjects and matters you do not understand! Explain to me how we are greedy.

If you all who is looking at the vacation time that you think teachers have you will think different. Why do you not join the profession since you think we have a long break each time. Our breaks are taken up planning lessons, completing curriculum, planning how to control your children that you send to see everyday that are out of control. We really do not have time to teach we have to do more discipline than teaching. Maybe if parents will do their part at home with their children teachers will love the profession more. Right now teachers see teaching as just a job that can hardly pay their bills because the powers that be have no respect for the job that we do. Remember that TEACHER MAKE ALL PROFESSION POSSIBLE. Wish out a teacher there would not be any Minister of Education, doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc. Treat us with respect then you might be able to retain the people that you need to educate the next leaders of this country/world.

Well Honorable, there is one solution to the problem. Everyone in the BVIs that either calls the talk shows or hide behind the bloggs and speak about "BORN HERE" let them come forward and showcase their " BORN HERE PATRIOTISM ".
This is the time to show who is 'BORN HERE FROM WHO IS ISLAND MAN OR WOMAN'
I am sure that at least half of the teacher's are foreigners " ISLAND MAN AND WOMAN". SO let BVISLANDERS step forward and take up the mantle. It is their place.
BVISLANDERS do not want to be ,Nurses,Teachers, and Police Officers but yet they are the bigest Critics. They will go to other islands and Country and be just that.
Not even Doctors they want to become in their own country and if they do,they all go into private practice.
When people finish working for Government over 30,35,and 40 years they can't even take home a good $2,500 a month in pension.

But again who is responsible for looking at increase in Salaries, BVISLANDERS , so then they have never been in support of better Salary for those three (3) particular occupation.
If you all don't want to do the job you all have to pay proper to get it done.
As the saying goes.,Put your money where your mouth is.

Towards all educator's especially secondary teachers and college level teachers. These are educator that set the tone for all individuals the set out of their career path. These educator help mold those minds, and yet the starting salary for them for years is 30k masters is under 45k to start. Compare this to other salary within the government you be surprise. And she is right a lot of teachers are leaving and planning to leave. For one to say they doing it for the love of the job isn't cutting it anymore. Why cost of living now has gone far above the little they make.

I truly feel sorry for educators, i have a few that work for the high school and i know the struggles they go through and some are now either considering retiring or find a better job.

In keeping with the trend of inflation in the Territory, I concluded that the salary of Public Servants not comparable to the inflation because every day there is an increase in price for some commodities in the supermarkets. The Minister of Finance assured the country that he has given instructions to the Financial Secretary to find money to pay two years of increment to all Public Servants, including teachers. To single out teachers to receive an increase in salary would cause rebellion from the other sectors of Civil Servants. Since this government took office there has been an increase in salaries by way of increments. I am subjected to correction.
This government came into office after the passage of two major hurricanes, Irma and Maria. In addition, there was the COVID-19 pandemic. These factors caused a reduction of revenue in the treasury. I must commend the government for doing a fantastic job. Despite the circumstances there was not any laying off of any government employees. At the same time there are rehabilitation of government schools and other projects. That is a government much with little.
As a group of young politicians, what they did must be commended and I am looking forward to continue to support them when the General Election is announce.

If the teachers are there just for the money they must go. This will show whether they care about helping their students to develop or not. When teachers worked for half of what teachers are getting today, their students came out of school Reading well and were able to enter jobs where they were given praise for how they could fit in and handle the job.. Who went out further studies could stand out in their field . Now the complaint is they cannot read. If you do not care about our children,s development leave now for you are not suitable for the vocation.

You cannot bring positive change to the teacher shortage situation using the negative energy that contribute and create the teachers shortage situation. Half of the problems teachers get with students in the high school is attributed to the children home. Parents fail to socialize their children with the foundation discipline required so they are able to maximize learning opportunities when in school.

Anyone making less than $60K per annum I can image is struggling in this type of economy if they have rent and bills to pay. $34K for teachers that is like doing voluntary service , Teachers are the most important persons in my opinion, there would be no other careers without teachers, they should get the highest pay. In any country education and health always get the chunk of the budget so why is teachers pay not on par with doctors!!!
